NC Boys 0-2 in Lewistown

The North Country boys basketball team dropped both their games at the Lewistown Showcase this past weekend. The Mavericks, under first-year head coach Haakon Frederickson, fell to Fort Benton 65-40 Friday then lost 68-30 to Denton-Geyeser-Stanford-Geraldine (DGSG) Saturday.

Fort Benton established a 25-11 lead after one quarter but North Country cut it to 33-26 at the half. Unfortunately for the Mavericks, Fort Benton turned in a strong second half, outscoring North Country 14-5 and 18-9 in the last two quarters.

Blaine Downing led the Mavericks with 16 points followed by Coy Bowman with 9 and Kade Strommen with 8 points. Andrew Boucher added 4, Jaydeen Hansshaw 2 and Laytin Erickson hit a free throw.

North Country had 12 fouls, seven in the second half. Erickson was called for four, Strommen three and Downing two fouls. Bowman, Hanshaw and Boucher had one infraction each.

The Mavericks fell behind early to DGSG Saturday, trailing 17-4 after one. DGSG led 30-15 at the half and outscored North Country 21-8 in the third. The eventual winners held North Country to 7 in the fourth while putting up 17 points.

Downing again led with 20 points. Bowman hit for 5 with a three-pointer. Strommen and Boucher each scored 2 and Austin Hanley hit a free throw.

North Country had 14 fouls, split evenly between the halves. Strommen had four while Downing, Bowman and Erickson were called for three fouls each. Hanshaw drew a single whistle.

The Mavericks host the Nashua Porcupines in Hinsdale Thursday, Dec. 15 with games at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, they host the Dodson Coyotes in Whitewater with games also at 6 and 7:30 p.m. North Country travels to Circle Saturday, Dec. 17 for games at 4 and 5:30 p.m.
