Glasgow Hosts 26 Schools For Scottie Wrestling Invitational

Lamb Becomes First Scottie Girl To Win A HS Tournament

Glasgow hosted 26 schools with 258 wrestlers competing in the 27th Annual Scottie Wrestling Invitational Dec. 9 and 10. The Scotties put three grapplers on the podium after two days of intense competition.

Freshman Khye Gamas took third place at 138 lbs. and senior Mason Donaldson earned second place at 170 lbs. Eighth-grader Madison Lamb made GHS history by becoming the first Scottie girl to win a high school tournament when she defeated Baker's Ryann Gorder in the 145 category.

The Scottie boys as a team took fifth place out of 26 schools with 107.5 points while the girls team earned 16th place out of 19 schools with just two grapplers who earned Glasgow 16 points.

For the boys, seniors Ethan Nickels earned a fifth place at 205 lbs. and Jack Cornwell took fifth at 152 lbs. Freshman William Kirkland took sixth at 145 lbs., while sophomores Ted See and Michael King both won seventh place finishes, at 120 lbs. and 160 lbs., respectively. Junior Joaquin Torres took eighth place at 120 lbs.

Blake Ozark, the only other Scottie girl to compete this past weekend, took sixth place at 132 lbs.

"Right now, the Sidney tournament is probably the toughest we've ever been to and then this one was tough," Jory Casterline said after the meet.

"We're trying to figure things out," said Casterline. Glasgow's head coach is currently shuffling guys around to see if the staff will keep wrestlers at their current weight or shift them a class. The Scotties have also been battling illnesses with athletes in and out of practice this past week.

"With that Sidney tournament, I knew going in there that was going to be a tough one and then this one ..." he said. After a moment's reflection he added, "We got a high ceiling, I feel, with our guys. We got a lot of room for improvement. We build as the season goes. That's one thing we always talk about: our strength is schedule and we just grow and grow and grow."

Casterline noted he was missing Riley Clampitt due to illness and Kaylly Turner out to an injury for this meet on the girls roster. He is also looking for senior Mo Fast to make his season debut. Fast has yet to be cleared to wrestle due to a knee injury.

Casterline also pointed out some early season highlights. "We gained a couple new kids: Joaquin Torres and Rhett Eklund are new to the sport. It's always nice to get those. They're doing a good job, they won some matches this weekend so that's fun for them."

Looking to his girls roster he said, "I mean, an eighth-grader [Lamb] wins this tournament: she's tough and she's mean, she likes it. Blake Ozark wrestled this weekend she got some wins under her belt ... We're right there with our girls."

This week, Glasgow travels to Great Falls. The varsity squads will wrestle the CMR Holiday Classic Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16 and 17, while JV grapplers will compete in the Walt & Trudy Currie JV Tournament Saturday. The JV team will also attend the Fort Benton Mixer Thursday, Dec. 15.
