Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
Community is defined by Google as “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” I would love to expand on that, and not just the definition, but about the Glasgow community itself. It’s no secret that I was not born nor raised here, but I am happy to have lived here now for eight years. I am sure the tale is as old as time…someone moves here from a “bigger city” and they are sad about it, mad about it, whatever emotion comes to mind. But generally, the consensus is initially not a good one. But in due time, Glasgow draws you in, full force, and unwavering in its prideful roots. I’ll admit it, I was not happy about moving here from Billings to begin with. But now, I would never move or look back. I am elated to call Glasgow my forever home.
Why is Glasgow the epitome of the word “Community?” It’s about its people.
First and foremost, community is not a place, a building, or an organization; nor is it an exchange of information over the Internet. Community is both a feeling, and relationships among its members. People form and maintain communities to meet common needs. Members of our community have a sense of trust, belonging, safety, and caring for one another. They have an individual and collective sense that they can, as part of this community, influence their environments and each other. That treasured feeling of community comes from shared experiences and a sense of—not necessarily the actual experience of— but, shared history. As a result, people know who is and isn’t part of their community. This feeling is fundamental to human existence and experience.
Glasgow, thank you for letting people experience true community. Glasgow is a community that allows one to be heard, valued, and appreciated. Glasgow is a place of hope, growth, and never-ending potential. Glasgow is a place where spirits run free and reach for the stars. Glasgow is a place where one knows that they will never go without, especially in their darkest days. Glasgow offers a feeling of comradery that one does not always get to experience, maybe never even in a lifetime. Glasgow, Montana, while it may rest smack dab in the middle of nowhere, it certainly feels like the center of something unforgettable.
