Volleyball Wins 2B District Tournament

The Scottie volleyball team rolled through the District 2B Tournament in Poplar this past weekend undefeated, topping their run with a championship victory over the Malta M-ettes. The trophy is the fourth claimed by Glasgow in as many years, and the 20th one in their 31 years in the district.

Glasgow started the tournament with a bye as the number one seed. They took on the Poplar Indians in match three after Poplar defeated Harlem in the opening round. The Scotties took the match in a decisive three-set match: 25-9, 25-14, 25-9.

The team put 11 aces, 28 kills, 24 assists, eight blocks and 25 digs in the books. Tatum Nyquist led the team in aces with four followed by Daley Aune with three and Carly Nelson two. Sammy Tryan and Macy Martin each added one. Nelson led in kills with nine, followed by Nyquist with eight. Piper Johnson notched six kills while Ava Lloyd added three and Aune two. Aune, as she has done all season, owned the assists category with 23. Martin added one. Lloyd blocked seven shots and Aune one. Nelson led in digs with nine followed by Nyquist, seven; Tryan, five; Martin, three, and Aune one.

Glasgow moved on to face Wolf Point, after the Wolves downed Malta in their first match. The Scotties put the Wolves into the backside of the bracket after a sweep: 25-19, 25-20, 25-17.

As a team, the Scotties registered five aces, 22 kills, 21 assists, seven blocks and 36 digs. Aune and Nelson each put up two aces and Joely Chappell added one. Nyquist notched half the team's kills with 11, followed by Nelson with five and Lloyd three. Aune, Johnson and Hayden Green added one kill a piece. Aune had 20 assists with Martin again adding one. Johnson and Lloyd knocked down three Wolves' shots each and Nelson blocked one shot. Tryan led in digs with 13. Nyquist, Aune and Martin hit six each followed by Nelson with four and Johnson one.

The win advanced the Scotties to the hopper where they would face their rival M-ettes, who battled their way the long way round to the championship. Glasgow gave up just one game to Malta in their march to the hardware – 25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17 – and proved their mental fortitude by not giving up even when they fell behind at times.

The Scotties combined for three aces, 40 kills, 33 assists, six blocks and 57 digs. Nyquist had two of the team's aces while Martin added the third. Nelson registered an impressive 19 kills. Johnson added nine, Nyquist seven, Aune three and Lloyd two. Aune, surprising no one, led in assists with 25. Martin added seven and Johnson one. Glasgow spread the blocks out in their final match of the weekend: Lloyd knocked down two Malta shots while Aune, Nelson, Nyquist and Johnson made the stat sheet with one each. Tryan led in digs with 15 while Aune put up 13 and Nelson 11. Nyquist and Martin each had eight and Lloyd added two for Glasgow.

The four seniors – Aune, Lloyd, Nelson and Tryan – told the Courier the key to their win was a combination of hustle, energy and teamwork. "I feel like we're way closer than we've ever been," said Lloyd as her teammates vociferously agreed. Asked how it felt to win another championship, the consensus was an enthusiastic, "Great!"

Glasgow travels to Choteau for the Class B Northern Divisional Volleyball Tournament, Nov. 3 through 5. The Scotties face the Cut Bank Wolves in the opening round for a 10 a.m. match Thursday at 10 a.m.

Glasgow's seniors said about the next post-season event, "We're just gonna go in and give it all we've got, just playing on the floor together."
