Glasgow Runs Con-Game

Scotties Shut Out Cowboys 60-0 for Homecoming

Glasgow residents should rest assured that war hasn't broken out, though the thought may have crossed a mind or two after the number of cannon shots heard Friday night. The Scotties ran their homecoming game, shutting out the visiting Conrad Cowboys by a 60-0 final score.

The game belonged to the Scotties from their first possession when Tatum Hansen started the scoring deluge less than three minutes in with a 9-yard rush into the end zone. Jack Cornwell added the two-point conversion on a rush of his own.

Glasgow shut down Conrad's offense much to the delight of a roaring home crowd and with the ball back in their hands, the Scotties continued their game plan. With 4:40 remaining in the first quarter Toryn Richards completed a 1-yard rush over the goal line to take the score to 14-0 for the Scotties. The two-point attempt failed.

The Scotties were far from done though, even in the first quarter, as they showed their passing game was also in play. Quarterback Mason Donaldson connected with Mo Fast from 28-yards away and Fast did the rest of the work, showing some fancy footwork up the sideline and into the end zone for Glasgow's third touchdown. Hansen tacked on the extra two points with another rush with 3:18 remaining in the first.

Glasgow would not, did not, let up on the young Conrad team. They sent yet another player into the end zone with only 9 seconds left in the first quarter. Mason Hunter ran the ball 6-yards for the touchdown and Cornwell successfully converted the two point attempt, snagging a throw from Donaldson. The Scotties led 30-0 when the first 12 minutes expired.

The Scottie show continued in the second quarter with two more touchdowns. Donaldson started the running clock at 8:37 with a successful quarterback keeper from nine yards out and Wyatt Babb added the 2 with a catch in the end zone.

Cornwell cranked up the heat with a 31-yard catch from Donaldson and sprinted into the end zone for his own touchdown. Aiden Hoerster shredded the Cowboys defense to carry the ball into the end zone on the two point attempt with 1:35 left in the first half.

Glasgow left the field for the halftime break to give the cannon operators time to reload while carrying a 46-0 lead.

The Scotties set about burning out the lights in the scoreboard with more touchdowns in the second half. Khye Gamas, in at QB, threw 14 yards to Vaughn Miller, who came down with the ball in the back of the end zone. The Scotties were unsuccessful in their two point attempt with 4:45 left on the clock.

Glasgow's final touchdown came midway through the final quarter when Hunter became the only Scottie to notch two touchdowns in the game. He went straight up the middle from a yard out for the score. Connor Hudyma sidestepped the Cowboys to also make his way into scoring territory in the Scotties' two point conversion. Glasgow's 60-0 lead held as the clock ran out, giving the Scotties a 6-1 overall record, 3-0 in conference play.

"It was a great all around team win in all three phases of the game. Congrats to our guys on a big homecoming win!," said assistant coach Dylan Hughes. "I was really happy to see our offense get off to a fast start and really work together as a unit. We scored eight touchdowns as a team, with seven different players scoring touchdowns, and six different receivers catching passes."

Glasgow's offense put up 330 total yards of offense, 311 net yards, with an average of 6.03 yards per carry, 11.9 yards per passing attempt and 7.2 yards per play.

The Scotties had 187 rushing yards. Hunter had 45 yards on seven carries with two touchdowns. Richards put up 36 yards on five carries with a TD. Donaldson added 28 yards on two carries and a TD while Hansen added 25 yards on four carries with a TD. Wyatt Sugg added 23 yards on three carries, Fast 17 yards on two carries, Dillon Hughes 14 yards on three carries, and Gamas 2 yards on one carry. Nic Solorzano and Coy Nelson also had carries for Glasgow.

The team turned in a balanced offense on receiving yards as well with 143 yards on catches. Fast had 47 yards on two receptions and Cornwell added 31 on his successful catch. Ashton Potter had 24 yards, Hoerster 15, Miller 14 and Babb 12, each with a single catch.

Donaldson had 114 passing yards, going 6-for-9, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Gamas added 29 passing yards, completing two of three passes, with one touchdown and no interceptions. Both quarterbacks had a 66.7 success rate on passes.

"Our defense and special teams gave us a short field to work with and our offense was able to convert those short fields into points," Hughes said. "As always I'm proud of the way our guys played and the way they continue to work and improve in practice. We'll go through the film this week, make a few tweaks and start prepping for Malta."

The Scottie defense certainly played their role well in the win. "It was great to get back and play in front of an awesome crowd for homecoming," said assistant coach Sam Tedrow. "Dominating performance by our guys on both sides of the ball and a heck of a job by our younger guys getting and keeping the shutout in tact."

Glasgow gave up only 95 total yards to Conrad, 77 net yards. The Cowboys had 51 yards rushing on six carries and 44 yards passing, going 8-for-26 in that category. Glasgow had 10 pass break-ups in the game and two interceptions. Gamas led in PBUs with three, followed by Fast and Nate Hentges with two each. Grady Nielsen, Kohl Kittleson and Solorzano had one a piece. Hoerster had both interceptions, converting those into 70 yards for Glasgow. Hentges added another 25 yards with a fumble recovery.

Cornwell led the team in tackles with four total. Babb, Miller, Hoerster and Connor Hudyma each had three. Fast added two as did Nielsen and Gamas. Ethan Nickles, Richards, Coy Nelson, Kittleson, D. Hughes and Tavin Boland had one tackle a piece.

Glasgow had no punts in the game, an impressive special teams stat. Kittleson had 236 yards on eight kickoffs, averaging 29.5 yards per kick. Myles Yoakam had one kickoff return – recovered onside. Potter had 17 yards on one punt return.

"Great to see both sides of the ball starting to gel as we prep for Malta's offense. Going to be an awesome test for our defense with their mis-direction and play-action game," Tedrow said.

In JV action Monday night, the Scotties defeated the Class A Havre Blue Ponies 36-6 at Scottie Field. They will play Malta Monday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m. in Glasgow.
