Scotties 'Nest' the Eagles

Glasgow's football team sent the Fairfield Eagles back to their nest Sept. 30 with a 16-6 road victory.

"I want to congratulate our boys on being the first team to give Fairfield their first conference loss at home in 12 years. Fairfield is a solid team with a solid coach and great history, it is a tough place to play," said assistant coach Dylan Hughes. "It was a hard fought gritty win and we played tough the entire game."

The Scotties lit up the scoreboard first when quarterback Mason Donaldson connected with wide receiver Wyatt Babb on a 61-yard bomb for the touchdown with 6:10 left in the opening quarter. Glasgow's two-point attempt failed, giving the boys in red and white a 6-0 lead.

Fairfield ended the first quarter with an interception in what was a defensive battle of a game, but the Scotties prevented the Eagles from notching a touchdown until the end of the first half. A two-yard quarterback sneak put Fairfield on the board with 28 seconds remaining. A failed two-point attempt put the score at 6-6 going into the half. Entering the locker rooms, each team had two interceptions with five total turnovers between the two.

The second half started with another fumble on the Scotties' side as the Eagles shut down a Glasgow run. However, the Glasgow defense recovered immediately with a Tatum Hansen sack in the end zone for a safety, giving the Scotties an 8-6 lead early in the third quarter.

The defensive battle continued into the final quarter, ending with some huge Scottie plays for the win. Toryn Richards came down with a huge interception with under two minutes remaining, the eighth turnover of the game, and Glasgow made excellent use of their possession. Hansen built up the Scotties' lead with a 67-yard touchdown and Donaldson added the extra two points with 1:10 remaining in the game.

Fairfield's comeback chance was quickly extinguished when Nate Hentges came down with a Scottie interception to seal the win for Glasgow.

Ethan Nickels centered the Scottie defense with seven tackles, all unassisted, followed by Mo Fast with six total, three unassisted. Hansen and Richards notched five total tackles each, with four unassisted a piece.

Hansen had four tackles for loss while Nickels added two and Babb one. Hansen and Babb each had a sack in the win. Hentges, Richards and Ashton Potter each snagged a Fairfield pass with Hentges gaining the Scotties 7 yards and Richards 17 yards.

Glasgow allowed Fairfield only 37 yards on 27 carries and 108 passing yards with three Glasgow interceptions for 118 total yards of Fairfield offense.

Kohl Kittleson had 46 yards on three kickoffs for an average of 15.33 yards. Babb had 173 yards on seven punts for a 24.7 average. Aiden Hoerster had 15 yards on one kick off return while Khye Gamas added 18 yards on two returns. Potter had 8 yards on one punt return for special teams.

"We like to hang our hats on being a physical and ball-hawking team and our guys proved that Friday. Holding a rival to under 150 yards and forcing six turnovers was a statement performance for our guys," assistant coach Sam Tedrow told the Courier. "Couldn't be more proud of our guys battling through the weather and coming up with huge stop after huge stop. Looking forward to building upon this game and carrying the momentum into Conrad."

Hansen led the Scotties in rushing yards, registering 121 yards on 22 carries. Donaldson put up 52 yards on six carries followed by Richards with four yards on one carry and Fast with three yards on three carries. Jack Cornwell had no gain on two carries.

Donaldson had 104 passing yards with Fast earning 34 receiving yards on two catches and Babb 60 yards on three catches.

"We will continue to make adjustments and improve. I'm excited by the way we continue to evolve each week," Hughes said. "I'm looking forward to a fun and exciting homecoming weekend."

In JV action Oct. 1, the Scotties also came away with the win as they shut out the Eagles 24-0. Tedrow said, "In an early morning game where coaches had to referee, JV was able to get the intensity up and lead the way from start to finish."

The Scotties' record now sits at 5-1 overall, 2-0 in Northern B play.

Glasgow hosts the Conrad Cowboys Friday, Oct. 7. The Scotties and the Cowboys have met 14 times in their history with Glasgow leading the series 8-6. The homecoming game will kick off at 7 p.m. and halftime will feature the Scottie Pep Band, Hi-Line Cloggers and the Saskatoon Police Pipe & Drums and Dancers.
