GMS boys win home cross country meet
Glasgow Middle School boys won their home cross country meet Saturday, requiring a tie-breaking 6th runner to edge Harlem for the title. Glasgow's girls took third place as a team.
Most runners on both squads posted personal records as they took advantage of the fast course at Fort Peck's Kiwanis Park, in addition to stiff competition from over a dozen schools, and vocal hometown fans. Many runners dropped their best-ever times by 30 seconds to a minute, an achievement that coaches have been focused on.
"Individual and team placing is huge, but we love to see runners setting new personal records from week to week," says Coach Andrew McKean. "The ultimate competition in cross country is with yourself, and this shows that kids are pushing themselves to their personal limits."
Among the standout performances from Saturday, Glasgow 8th grader Haleigh Huntsman again finished as the top Scottie, taking second place overall in a scorching time of 9:47 for the 1.5-mile course. Other girl scorers for Glasgow included 6th graders Alexa Ball, 10th in 10:29 and Harper Wesen, 19th in 10:59; 8th grader Jensina Tweten, 21st in 10:59; and 6th grader Amani Probert, 40th in 12:15.
Rounding out the Scottie girls were 7th grader Willow Sugg (55th in 13:10), 6th grader Ryder Bilger (60th in 13:23), 6th grader Harper Thompson (62nd in 13:35), 8th grader Rebekah Bailey (72nd in 14:29), and 7th grader Romie Zumbuhl (82nd in 15:32).
The Scottie boys were paced by 7th grader Garrett Thompson, 7th overall in a fast 9:25. Other scorers included 8th grader Rowen Kloker (14th in 9:54), 7th grader Jack Milam (16th in 9:56), 6th grader Nik Kulczyk (22nd in 10:18), and 6th grader Holt Huntsman (24th in 10:23). The tie-breaking runner for the Glasgow, which gave the Scotties the team title, was 7th grader Ian Anderson, who took 31st place in 10:38.
Other Glasgow runners included 7th grader Aaron Mickelson (65th in 13:07), 6th grader Daniel Bailey (70th in 13:59), 7th grader Alex Earll (72nd in 14:03), 6th grader Paxton Wesen (73rd in 14:06), 6th grader Jett Johnson (77th in 15:43), and 6th grader Jacob Bishop (79th in 15:57).
Glasgow has a big week, heading to Frazer on Thursday afternoon for an intimidatingly hilly course overlooking the Missouri River, and then to Culbertson on Saturday for a race that winds in and around the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds.
