Reds Take Second at Williston Tournament

The Glasgow Reds claimed second place at the Williston Tournament this past weekend.

Glasgow defeated Froid 6-0 and Williston 15’s 8-2 to put them in first place in pool play. They then defeated the Williston Oilers 31-11 to put them in the chipper against Burlington.

The championship game was a back-and-forth slugfest with the Reds eventually falling to Burlington 34-23.

The Reds started out their tournament with a shut out of Froid with Rance Rhoads on the mound.

Glasgow started their scoring in the top of the second when Gage Siefert crossed the plate on a Jordan Plummer line drive to center field. They added three runs in the third. JT Sprague scored on a Rhoads sacrifice fly to right field. Michael Hunter drove Juliun Benson and Jeramiah Benson home with a ground ball to left field.

Jeramiah Benson scored for the Reds again in the fifth, finishing his trip around the bases on a Tatum Hansen sacrifice fly to left field. Sprague added his second run of the game in the sixth, scoring on a Juliun Benson ground ball to center field.

Rhoads threw 94 pitches over the course of seven innings. He pitched a 73.4 strike percentage with 14 strikeouts while allowing only a single hit in the game. Glasgow sent Froid back to the field after three-up, three-down performances in the final three innings.

Glasgow put up 10 hits in the game led by Juliun Benson who went 3-for-4 at bat. Hunter went 2-for-2 at the plate. Sprague, Jeramiah Benson, Hansen, Siefert and Plummer added a hit each. Hunter had two of the Reds’ six RBIs while Juliun Benson, Rhoads, Hansen and Plummer had one a piece.

Jeramiah Benson stole two bases in leading the Reds. Juliun Benson, Hansen, Hunter and Jack Kolstad had one each.

The Reds took on the Williston 15’s next and ended the game after five innings with a 9-2 victory.

Glasgow scored once in the first inning when Sprague took advantage of an error by the pitcher to touch home plate. Williston answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, which would prove to be their only scores in the game.

The Reds tied the game in the second when Kolten Hansen, in as a courtesy runner for Plummer, scored on a Juliun Benson line drive to left field.

Glasgow took full control of the game in the top of the third with five runs. T. Hansen scored on an error by the 15’s catcher with Plummer at bat. Toryn Richards scored on a passed ball with Kolstad at the plate. A double by Juliun Benson sent Sprague home while Benson scored on a Hunter ground ball. Jeramiah Benson was next across the plate, scoring on an error by the shortstop with T. Hansen at bat.

The Reds scored once again in the fourth and fifth innings. Richards stole home with Juliun Benson at the plate in the fourth and Siefert scored in the fifth when Sprague was hit by a pitch, advancing all the runners.

Glasgow outhit Williston 8-2 in the game led by Richards who went 3-for-4 at bat. Juliun Benson went 2-for-4 at the plate while Rhoads, Hunter and Plummer contributed one hit each. Sprague and Juliun Benson both had one RBI. Juliun Benson, Richards and Sprague had two stolen bases each. Jeramiah Benson and T. Hansen stole one base a piece.

Hunter earned the win for Glasgow, throwing 75 pitches over five innings. He pitched a 65.3 strike percentage with eight strikeouts. He allowed two runs on two hits.

Glasgow staged a come-from-behind win Sunday morning against the Williston Oilers to earn their trip to the chipper. The Reds overcame an eight-run deficit with a seven-run performance in the bottom of the fifth to claim a 13-11 win.

Williston came out strong in the first, taking an 8-1 lead. Glasgow’s run came from Spague, who scored on a Rhoads’ sacrifice fly to shortstop.

The Reds shut the Oilers out in the second before adding three runs to cut Williston’s lead in half. T. Hansen scored on a passed ball with Plummer at the plate. Juliun Benson’s sacrifice fly to center field sent Richards home. Kolstad took advantage of an error by the shortstop to cross home with Jeramiah Benson at bat.

The Oilers built their lead back up in the top of the fourth with three runs before the Reds caught up with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth.

Rhoads kicked off the comeback with a home run on a line drive to center field, sending Jeramiah Benson home as well. Kolstad’s ground ball sent Hunter home. Juliun Benson’s line drive to right field sent T. Hansen and Kolstad across the plate. Next, Sprague scored on a passed ball with Rhoads at bat. Juliun Benson also scored on a passed ball, adding the Reds’ final run of the inning with Hunter at the plate.

The Oilers went three up, three down in the top of the sixth before Glasgow took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. T. Hansen stole home and Richards scored when Sprague sacrificed his body, advancing all the runners. The Reds shut out the Oilers in the top of the seventh to end the game with a 13-11 advantage.

Glasgow was outhit 9-3 in the game. Juliun Benson, Jeramiah Benson and Rhoads registered the hits for the Reds. Juliun Benson and Rhoads each had three RBIs to lead Glasgow while Sprague and Kolstad added one a piece.

T. Hansen had two stolen bases for Glasgow while Jeramiah Benson, Kolstad, Walker Laumeyer, Richards and Sprague all added one each.

Sprague earned the win for Glasgow, pitching two and one-third innings. He allowed no runs one hit while throwing three strikeouts and a 71.0 strike percentage. Juliun Benson started the game on the mound for Glasgow. He threw a 37.5 strike percentage with one strikeout and allowed eight runs on one hit over two-thirds of an inning. Richards relieved him for four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He threw one strikeout and a 56.6 strike percentage.

The win moved the Reds to the championship game where they faced off against Burlington where the bats were hot.
