Fall to Glendive, 10-Run Richland County
The Glasgow Reds hit the field this past week at home on Tuesday against Glendive and Friday against Richland County.
Tuesday, in temperatures not even hockey fans appreciated, the Reds dropped two games to the Blue Devils, 5-3 and 8-5. They rebounded strongly on Friday ending both games early against the Patriots by the score of 15-5.
Glendive took the early lead in game one on Tuesday and never gave it up. The Blue Devils put up three runs in the top of the second while Glasgow scored once each in the bottom of the third and fourth. Glendive added two more runs in the top of the fifth but the Reds cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning. A scoreless sixth and seventh however gave the win to the visitors.
Tatum Hansen scored Glasgow's first run in the third inning, driven home by a Juliun Benson ground ball to center field. Mason Hunter scored on a passed ball with Hansen at the plate in the fourth while Juliun Benson scored after tagging when Jeramiah Benson hit a fly out to left field in the bottom of the fifth.
Glasgow outhit Glendive in the first game by a 9-2 margin. The Reds were led at the plate by Juliun Benson, Rance Rhoads and Mason Hunter with two hits each. Hansen, Jeramiah Benson and Toryn Richards added one a piece with Jeramiah Benson notching the only RBI for the Reds.
Juliun Benson, Rhoads and JT Sprague each stole a base in the loss.
Sprague took the Reds' loss on the mound, giving up five runs on two hits in just over five innings. He threw a 56.5 strike percentage with two strikeouts. Rhoads relieved him for an inning and two-thirds, allowing no hits or runs. He threw a 66.7 strike percentage with three strikeouts.
Glasgow led for most of game two but Glendive pulled ahead late to take the victory.
The Reds went up 4-1 after one inning. Hansen was first to cross the plate, scoring on a Rhoads line drive to center field. Sprague scored next, advancing to home when Jeramiah Benson was hit by a pitch. Juliun Benson scored on a passed ball with Richards at the plate and Rhoads scored when Richards knocked a line drive to right field.
The Blue Devils tied the game with a run in the second and two in the third but the Reds retook a single run lead in the bottom of the fourth when Juliun Benson drove Hansen home with a ground ball.
The score was the last for Glasgow while Glendive tied the game in the sixth and sent three runners home in the seventh to win the game.
Glendive outhit Glasgow 12-6 in the second game. Hansen, Sprague, Juliun Benson, Rhoads, Jeramiah Benson, Richards and Plummer each notched a hit for Glasgow. Rhoads, Jeramiah Benson and Richards evenly split the Reds RBIs.
Hansen had two stolen bases to lead the Reds as Juliun Benson, Hunter, Jordan Plummer and Richards added one each.
Hunter, on the mound for Glasgow, took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits. He threw a 62.7 strike percentage with one strikeout over three innings. Juliun Benson, in as relief pitcher, allowed four runs on five hits over the remaining four innings. He threw four strikeouts with a 60.3 strike percentage.
Back on Bill Connors Field on Friday, the Reds faced the Richland County Patriots in much warmer weather. Glasgow, in turn, turned up the offensive heat.
The Reds took a 4-2 lead after one inning in game one and did not look back.
Juliun Benson drove Hansen and Sprague home with a ground ball. After reaching first on the error, Juliun Benson scored on the next batter when Rhoads nailed a line drive to center field. Rhoads took advantage of Patriot errors to score two batters later with Jeramiah Benson at bat.
Glasgow sent Richland County back to the field after a three-up, three-down performance by the visitors in the top of the second. The home team then added three more runs to pad their lead.
Juliun Benson tripled on a fly ball to center field, sending Jack Kolstad and Hansen home in the process. He scored on a passed ball with Rhoads at the plate.
Richland County scored a single run in the top of the third before Glasgow came up scoreless in the bottom of the inning. The Patriots could not cut into the Reds lead in the top of the fourth and allowed Glasgow to build it up further in the bottom of the inning.
Juliun Benson hit an inside-the-park home run to kick off the five-run inning for the Reds. Rhoads scored on a passed ball before Jeramiah Benson sent Hunter home with a fly ball to center field. Jeramiah Benson rounded home on a passed ball with Hansen at the plate. A Hansen single line drive to left field sent Plummer home to finish out the inning's scoring.
Two runs by the Patriots were not enough to catch the visitors up to the home team and Glasgow broke out the salt in the bottom of the inning with three more runs.
Jeramiah's hard ground ball sent Juliun Benson and Rhoads home. Hunter stole home – and the game as the Reds went up by 10 runs – with Plummer at bat.
Glasgow outhit Richland County 10-6 in the game.
Juliun Benson was the Reds leader with four runs, a stolen base and five RBIs while going 3-for-4 at bat. Rhoads went 2-for-2 at bat while Hansen, Sprague, Jeramiah Benson, Aiden Price and Kolstad each added a hit. Jeramiah Benson added three RBIs for Glasgow. Hansen and Rhoads had one each. Hansen, Hunter, Plummer, Price, Rhoads and Sprague also had a stolen base each in the win.
Beau Malnaa earned the win on the mound, throwing 77 pitches over the five innings. He allowed five runs on six hits while throwing five strikeouts and a 55.8 strike percentage.
Game two started slower offensively, but a six-run performance in both the fourth and fifth innings propelled the Reds to another 10-run victory.
Glasgow went up 2-1 after one as Sprague scored on a Rhoads ground-out and Juliun Benson rounded home on a Jeramiah Benson line drive to left field.
Glasgow sent Richland County back to the field in the top of the second and the third after allowing only three Patriot batters to the plate.
Juliun Benson scored again in the bottom of the third on a Rhoads ground ball to center field after stealing second and third.
The Patriots hit a short offensive spurt in the top of the fourth with three runs to briefly hold a 4-3 lead. However, the lead lasted through only four Reds batters before Glasgow tied the game.
Kolstad scored on a Juliun Benson ground ball. Then the Reds took firm control of the game.
Sprague scored with Rhoads at bat before the batter sent Juliun Benson home with a fly ball to center field. Jeramiah Benson drove Rhoads home with a fly ball in the next at-bat. Jeramiah rounded home on a Richards line drive to second base before Richards scored on a Malnaa fly ball to left field.
Glasgow allowed the Patriots to send one runner home in the top of the fifth before shutting down the game early with another six runs.
Kolstad scored on a passed ball with Juliun Benson at bat and Hansen took advantage of an error by the catcher to touch home plate. Wild pitching allowed Juliun Benson and Rhoads to add two runs for the Reds with Malnaa at the plate. Jeramiah Benson, who had been hit by a pitch, scored with Plummer at bat and Malnaa put the Reds up by 10 when Kolstad hit a pop fly to right field.
Glasgow had nine hits to Richland County's five in the game. Juliun Benson, Rhoads and Richards each had two to lead the Reds while Jeramiah Benson, Plummer and Kolstad added one a piece. Glasgow's five RBIs were split evenly between Sprague, Rhoads, Malnaa, Plummer and Kolstad.
Juliun Benson and Toryn Richards both stole two bases. Jeramiah Benson, Kolstad, Malnaa and Plummer had one stolen base each.
Price started the game on the mound for Glasgow, pitching for three innings. He allowed two runs on two hits with one strikeout and a 52.5 strike percentage. Malnaa relieved hime for a third of an inning, allowing two runs on one hit. He threw a 75.0 strike percentage with one strikeout.
The win went to Richards who pitched for one and two-thirds innings. He allowed one run on two hits. He pitched two strikeouts on a 69.7 strike percentage.
Glasgow travels to Glendive Wednesday, June 22, for a rematch double header against the Blue Devils with games at 3 and 5 p.m. The Reds will be in Billings Saturday, June 25, to take on the Cardinals at 5 and 7 p.m. They remain Billings for a double header against the Blue Jays on Sunday, June 26, with games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
