The Glasgow/Hinsdale/Nashua Scottie softball squad split a pair of non-conference games. The team procured a 6-1 victory over the Dawson County Red Devils Thursday on the road before dropping a home game 13-4 to the Fergus Golden Eagles Saturday.
Glasgow took a 2-0 lead over Dawson County after the first inning, a lead that held until the Scotties added three more runs in the fifth.
Stevie Hartwell was first to bat and first to cross the plate. She was walked then advanced to second and third on passed balls with Tatum Nyquist at bat. Nyquist drilled a ground ball to second base, singling and sending Hartwell home.
Nyquist took advantage of an error by the Red Devils second baseman to take her base. She rounded home on a double ground ball to right field by Brielle Partridge in the Scotties’ third at-bat. Glasgow’s next three batters – Daley Aune, Ashlee Meland and Carly Nelson – struck out swinging.
The Scottie defense took care of business in the bottom of the inning, allowing one single followed by two strikeouts by Aune and a pop out to second baseman Partridge. Glasgow’s defense set the pace as neither team registered another run until Glasgow stepped up to the plate in the top of the fifth.
Aune nailed a double line drive to left field, sending both Nyquist and Partridge home to double the Scotties lead. Aune advanced to third with Meland at the plate and scored on an error by Dawson’s catcher with Nelson at bat.
Dawson County put up a single run in the bottom of the fifth but Glasgow added their sixth run in the top of the seventh before shutting out their hosts in the bottom of the inning for the win. Aune scored the final run, crossing the plate when Nelson grounded out.
Glasgow outhit Dawson County 7-2 and committed only two errors to the Red Devils’ four.
Nyquist went 2-for-3 at bat to lead the Scotties in hits while Aune led in RBIs with two. Partridge, Aune, Meland, Alexis Murdock and Zandora Longtree also had hits for Glasgow while Nyquist, Partridge and Nelson each had an RBI. Aune also led in stolen bases with two. Meland and Partridge added one a piece.
Aune threw 100 pitches as she spent the duration of the game in the pitcher’s circle. She allowed one run on two hits with eight strikeouts, a 58.0 strike percentage.
Glasgow looked to start their game against Fergus in much the same way – with a 2-0 lead after one – but the Gold Eagles had other ideas. The visitors strong offensive performance in the next three innings propelled them to the win.
Fergus went three-up, three-down to start the game while Glasgow took the early lead. Hartwell scored on a Nyquist fly ball after tripling on her first trip to the plate. Nyquist completed her trip around the infield when Meland grounded out three batters later.
The Gold Eagles answered in the top of the second with three runs to take the lead briefly, but Glasgow’s Murdock scored on a Partridge single line drive.
Fergus retook the lead with one run in the third and increased it to 8-3 after four innings. Neither team lit up the scoreboard in the fifth. The Eagles added two more runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Glasgow’s Hartwell was the lone Scottie to touch home in the bottom of the seventh, scoring when Nyquist drilled a triple ground ball to left field.
The Scotties were outhit 15-6 in the contest and committed two errors to the Eagles’ one.
Hartwell and Nyquist both went 2-for-3 at bat with Partridge and Meland getting the other hits. Nyquiest, Partridge and Meland had one RBI a piece. Murdock, Nelson, Nyquist and Partridge each stole a base.
Partridge started the game in the circle for Glasgow, throwing a 61.7 strike percentage and two strikeouts on 60 pitches. She allowed seven runs on eight hits. Aune relieved her for three and two-thirds innings. She allowed six runs on seven hits. Aune threw a 65.6 strike percentage and seven strikeouts on 87 pitches.
Glasgow hosted the Sidney Eagles Tuesday night for Senior Night.
The Scotties travel to Cut Bank Friday and Saturday, May 13 and 14, for the Class B/C East/West Challenge.
The Eastern B/C Softball Divisional Tournament will be held in Great Falls Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21.
