The Glasgow-Hinsdale-Nashua softball team went 1-2 last week, dropping a home game 15-3 to Dawson County before splitting their games at the Lewistown Invitational on Friday. The Scotties lost 5-2 to Park City before downing Lockwood 16-3 that afternoon.
Dawson took the early lead over Glasgow, racking up eight runs in the top of the first before allowing the Scotties two runs in the bottom of the inning. Ashlee Meland started in the pitcher's circle for the home team but after Dawson put on a hitting show, she was relieved by Daley Aune for the last out of the first.
Meland cut into the Red Devils' lead, scoring first for the Scotties when Brielle Partridge drilled a triple fly ball to center field. Partridge finished her trip around the bases when Aune sent a fly ball to right field and tripled herself.
The Red Devils continued to run up the score in the second with another five runs. Zandora Longtree was the lone Scottie to cross home plate in the second, scoring on a Meland ground ball.
Neither team scored in the third or fourth innings, with Glasgow sending Dawson back to the field after a three-up three-down Red Devils' performance in the fourth.
The Scotties' guests rebounded in the fifth though with two runs, putting Glasgow in a do-or-die position to keep the game alive. Dawson's defense came through despite some valiant effort by Glasgow, including Carly Nelson, who got a piece of five pitches before striking out swinging as the penultimate Scottie batter.
Meland allowed eight runs on nine hits in her time in the pitcher's circle while throwing a 69.0 strike percentage. Aune, in as relief, went just over three innings and allowed six runs on five hits while throwing a 56.2 strike percentage. Partridge finished the game for Glasgow, allowing one run on two hits while pitching a 66.7 strike percentage.
Partridge went 2-for-3 at the plate while Longtree was 1-for-1. Aune notched the only other hit for the Scotties. Partridge and Aune each batted in a runner. Meland led the team in stolen bases with two while Longtree and Nelson had one each.
The Scotties traveled on Friday for the Lewistown Invitational where they faced Park City and Lockwood.
Glasgow fell to Park City despite outhitting the Panthers 6-4 and sending them back to the field after a three-up three-down performance in four of the seven innings. Aune started the game in the pitcher's circle for the Scotties with two strikeouts. Partridge ended the Panthers' at bat with a fly out at shortstop.
The Scotties managed to get four batters to the plate but returned to the field without lighting up the scoreboard. The Panthers took the lead in the second inning, sending two runners around the bases on a home run hit. Glasgow registered three hits in the bottom of the inning but Park City shut down all scoring opportunities.
Park City went three-up three-down again in the top of the third before returning the favor by shutting Glasgow out in the bottom of the same. The Panthers added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth all the while keeping the Scotties from completing a trip around the infield.
Each team was able to send only three batters to the plate in the sixth inning. The Panthers, for the fourth time in the game, went three-up three-down in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the final inning, Hartwell singled on a fly ball to right field, sending Martin home while Longtree scored on the throw for Glasgow. The late offensive rally though was not enough for the Scotties to force extra innings.
Aune went the distance in the circle for Glasgow, throwing 115 pitches for Glasgow. She allowed five runs on four hits and threw a 57.4 strike percentage with 11 strikeouts.
Glasgow turned in a clean game with zero errors.
Hartwell led the Scottie squad with 12 plays and going 3-for-3 at the plate. Aune, Murdock and Longtree had the other three hits for Glasgow.
The Scotties turned up the offense in their second game of the day, ending their game against the Lions after four and a half innings. Glasgow allowed Lockwood two runs in the top of the first before sending eight runners home in the bottom of the inning.
Meland crossed the plate first, scoring on a Partridge single to shortstop. Hartwell stole home with Aune at the plate and Partridge followed suit and crossed the plate with Martin at bat. Aune also stole home, taking the score to 4-2.
Nyquist nailed a line drive to center field, allowing Martin to score on the throw. Four batters later, Nyquist scored when Meland was walked, advancing all the runners. Nelson and Longtree crossed the plate when Hartwell singled a fly ball to center field. Glasgow made it all the way through their lineup and then some but Lockwood ended the Scotties' scoring streak with a ground-out.
Glasgow allowed the Lions four batters in the top of the second but granted them no scoring chances. The Scotties converted their time at bat into a 15-2 lead after two innings. Martin, who had reached first on a dropped third strike, touched home first scoring on a passed ball with Nelson at bat. Nyquist rounded home on a Murdock single ground ball to shortstop and Nelson scored when Longtree grounded out. Murdock scored on a Meland single ground ball and Meland completed her trip around the infield on a Partridge ground ball. Partridge and Aune were both batted in by Nyquist, who nailed a double fly ball to left field before a ground out on the next batter ended the inning.
Glasgow ended Lockwood's next at bat with a double play with a ground out from Aune at shortstop to Nelson at first base. Murdock scored the only Scottie run of the third, crossing the plate on a Meland single to left field. Neither team scored in the fourth inning.
The Lions managed to send one runner home in the top of the fifth, but fell far short of the scoring necessary to keep the game going.
Partridge spend the game in the pitcher's circle, throwing 58 pitches. She allowed three runs on seven hits while throwing a 74.1 strike percentage.
Glasgow outhit Lockwood 17-7 in the game, led by Meland, Partridge and Nyquist, who all went 3-for-3 at the plate. Hartwell and Murdock were both 2-for-3 at bat. Ava Reyes, Aune, Martin and Nelson all added one hit each. Meland and Nyquist each had three RBIs to lead the Scotties while Hartwell and Partridge both notched two and Murdock and Longtree had one each.
The Scotties had nine stolen bases, led by Aune with three. Hartwell and Partridge each stole two while Martin and Murdock each filched one base.
Glasgow traveled to Sidney on Monday – the game rescheduled from Thursday, April 14 due to weather – where the Scotties defeated the Class A Eagles 20-3. A full recap will appear in next week's Courier. The Scotties' Tuesday home game against Lewistown was postponed due to weather. A new date has not yet been announced.
The Scotties will host Miles City Tuesday, April 19, at Jeff Jurgens Field with a 5 p.m. game time. They travel to Glendive on Thursday, April 21.
