The Glasgow-Hinsdale-Nashua Scottie softball team went 1-2 in their first week of the 2022 season, dropping their home opener to Havre 16-12 last Thursday before splitting two conference games at the Huntley triangular. The Scotties defeated Huntley Project 26-9 in their first game April 1 before losing 13-3 to Stillwater Christian.
The Blue Ponies lit up the scoreboard four times in the first inning before Glasgow racked up 10 runs in the bottom of the same.
The Scotties' first batter, Ashlee Meland, also scored first for Glasgow, touching home base when Stevie Hartwell hit a triple. Hartwell scored on a passed ball with Brielle Partridge at bat. Daley Aune hit a single as the fourth batter, stole second and scored when Carly Nelson singled to center field.
Nelson rounded the bases with Tatum Nyquist at the plate, advancing two bases on passed balls and scoring on Nyquist's ground-out hit.
Alexis Murdock and Macy Martin crossed the plate on a Zandora Longtree double fly ball to left field, and Longtree finished her infield trip on a double by Meland as Glasgow started through the line-up again. Hartwell batted Meland in before being batted in herself on a Partridge ground ball. Aune sent Partridge home on a double fly ball to left field.
Havre answered with five runs in the top of the second before shutting Glasgow out in the bottom of the same inning. Both teams posted goose eggs in the third before the Blue Ponies sent two runners home in the fourth and Nyquist batted Nelson in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 11 each.
The Blue Ponies added another four runs in the fifth to go up 15-11 before Hartwell knocked a ball out of the park for an easy home run for the Scotties, scoring Glasgow's last run of the game. Havre scored once more in the top of the seventh for the 16-12 victory.
Partridge started the game for Glasgow in the pitcher's circle, going four innings while allowing 15 runs on 17 hits and throwing 67.7 strike percentage. Aune relieved her for the remaining three innings and allowed one run on five hits while throwing a 64.2 strike percentage.
Hartwell led the Scotties in hits, going 3-for-5 at bat. Nelson went 2-for-3 at bat while Aune went 2-for-4 and Meland hit 2-for-5. Hartwell also led in RBIs with three followed by Longtree and Nyquist with two each.
In their first game in Huntley Project, Glasgow took an early and commanding lead over their hosts, going up 7-0 after one. Meland was first to cross the plate for Glasgow, stealing home with Aune at bat. Hartwell followed when Aune tripled on a line drive.
Aune completed her trip round the bases by taking advantage of a Huntley error with Nelson at the plate. Nelson scored on a Murdock ground ball and Nyquist scored on a passed ball on the next batter. Murdock also scored on a passed ball with Longtree at bat. Martin scored on a Hartwell fly ball, which resulted in a double play by Huntley to end the Scotties' at bat.
Glasgow notched their own double play in the bottom of the first when Aune caught a fly ball and sent the ball to Nelson at first who snagged the third out to end the inning.
Aune also kicked off the second inning scoring for Glasgow, singling, stealing second and crossing home on a Nelson single. Nelson imitated Aune and scored on a Nyquist double after stealing second. Nyquist finished her trip around the infield on a dropped third strike with Meland at bat. Hartwell batted in Murdock and Martin on a single fly ball for Glasgow's last scores of the second.
The Scotties shut out Huntley Project again in the bottom of the second before adding three more runs in the top of the third. Aune scored on a passed ball with Aspen Stulc at bat and then Martin sent Nelson home on a single ground ball and Nyquist scored on the throw.
The hosts cut into the Scotties' lead in the bottom of the third, sending six batters around the bases for 15-6 score to start the fourth inning.
Glasgow unleashed their offensive prowess in the top of the fourth, scoring 11 runs. Hartwell was first across the plate for the Scotties, sent home by Aune. Partridge was next, scoring when Huntley Project walked Nyqist. Aune took advantage of a passed ball to score on the next batter.
Nelson was sent home when Martin was hit by a pitch, advancing the runners. Nyquist stole home with Meland at bat and Martin scored when Partridge was walked. Meland and Hartwell were sent home by Aune who singled to left field. Partridge touched home on a Nelson single, also to left field. Aune scored with Martin back at the plate.
Huntley Project put three runs on the board in the bottom of the inning, but Glasgow shut down the home team's attempt to keep the game going.
Aune started the game in the pitcher's circle for Glasgow. Over two innings she allowed no runs on two hits while throwing a 46.7 strike percentage. Martin started the second inning, allowing six runs on one hit. Partridge relieved Martin and finished the game in the circle for the Scotties. She allowed three runs on five hits while pitching a 90.9 strike percentage.
Aune, 4-for-4, and Nelson, 3-for-3, led the Scotties at bat. Aune also led in RBIs with four. Martin also had four, followed by Hartwell with three and Nelson and Nyquist with two each. Meland, Stulc, Martin and Longtree each notched a stolen base.
The Scotties were right back on the field for a game against Stillwater Christian. Glasgow was shut out in the first two innings while Stillwater put six runs on the board in the first for an early lead.
Glasgow scored twice in the top of the third when Aune homered with a fly ball to center field and sent Hartwell home.
Stillwater increased their lead by one in the bottom of the inning before shutting down Glasgow's offense in the top of the fourth. They added two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 9-2 lead heading into the fifth.
Hartwell was the last Scottie to cross home plate, rounding home on a Partridge line drive to center field. Stillwater put up four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game two innings early.
Meland spent all five innings in the pitcher's circle for the Scotties, allowing 13 runs on 15 hits while throwing a 52.2 strike percentage.
Aune led in batting, going 2-for-3 at the plate, and in RBIs with two. Hartwell and Martin each had a stolen base for Glasgow.
Glasgow hosted the Dawson County Red Devils Monday at Jeff Jurgen Field. The Scotties lost the home match 15-3. The full story will appear in next week's Courier.
The Scotties travel to Lewistown this Friday, April 8, for the Lewistown Invitational. Glasgow plays Livingston at noon and Billings Lockwood at 4 p.m.
