The Nashua girls basketball team saw their 2021-2022 season come to an end at the Eastern C Divisional tournament in Sidney this past weekend. The Porcupines fell to the MonDak Thunder 40-32 Thursday evening in a tough fought game. The loss sent them to loser-out action Friday afternoon against Froid/Lake where the Redhawks came out on top of a 56-34 contest.
As the third seed out of the 3C, Nashua faced MonDak, the second seed out of the 2C, in their first game. The Porcupines held the lead for the first three quarters of their game against the Thunder but a 17-point fourth quarter by MonDak put them up at the end of 32 minutes of play.
Nashua led 9-7 after the first and 20-14 at the half. MonDak edged them by a point in the third to cut Nashua's lead to 5 points, 28-23, heading into the final eight minutes. Nashua put up another 9 points in the fourth but the Porcupines were unable to reign in the Thunder.
Tia Dees led the Porcupines in points, 17, and rebounds, 14. Dees hit 43.8 percent from the floor and went 3-for-3 at the line. She pulled down nine defensive rebounds and five offensive boards. She also added an assist and two steals.
Hadynn Adkins added 12 points, hitting 60 percent from the field. She added eight rebounds, split evenly on offense and defense. Deja Morgan added 5 points including a three-pointer. Guinevere Abern added a bucket and Alexis Murdock hit a free throw for Nashua.
The Porcupines were called for 14 fouls in the game while MonDak drew 13 infractions. Adkins had four, Kaitlyn Miller three and Murdock two fouls. Morgan, Abern and Madison Harris had one each.
Turnovers played a factor in the loss for Nashua. The Porcupines lost the ball 24 times compared to MonDak's 15 turnovers.
The loss moved Nashua to the back side of the bracket where they faced Froid/Lake, who had lost to North Country 62-22 on day one of the tournament.
The Redhawks established their lead in the first, and though the Porcupines tied the game once, Froid/Lake never relinquished control. Nashua trailed 12-8 after one and 20-14 at the half. A strong third quarter by the Redhawks saw them increase their lead to 14 points, 35-21. Froid/Lake outscored Nashua 21-13 in the final quarter.
Dees hit 50 percent from the field and went 2-for-3 at the free throw line to lead Nashua with 18 points. She added seven rebounds, three assists and one steal. Miller led in rebounds with nine while adding 5 points, an assist and three steals. Morgan also had three takeaways while scoring 4 points – going 2-for-3 on free throws – and grabbing two offensive boards. Adkins, Alyssa Murdock and Abern scored 2 points each. Alexis Murdock also sunk a free throw for Nashua.
Turnovers were again a factor for the Porcupines who lost the ball 27 times to the Redhawks' 17 errors. Froid/Lake was called for 16 fouls while Nashua drew officials' whistles 15 times. Dees was called for four, Adkins three and Morgan and Miller two each. Alexis Murdock, Alyssa Murdock, Abern and Gracyn Sibley had one a piece.
