Scottie S&D Holds End-of-Season Awards

Though the Scottie Speech and Drama team concluded their regular season at the State Meet in Huntley Project Jan. 29 & 30, the crew was not quite done with their year.

The team traveled to Billings Feb. 11 & 12 to compete in the National Speech & Debate Association's state meet with hopes of continuing on to the national level. This past Thursday they held their end-of-year Awards Ceremony in the Glasgow High School library.

In Billings, the Scotties found competition from AA, A and B/C schools. There were 230 competitors from 18 schools in the Eastern Division.

"It was a tough competition (AA, A and B/C schools were in attendance) and we were told by judges that there were several rounds where they wanted to give first place to every student in the round," said Scottie head coach Kristina McGee. "It was truly the best of the best!"

Glasgow senior Raelee Dowden was the only Scottie to advance to the semi-finals. She was entered in Dramatic Oral Interpretation and finished in 12th place overall.

Mason Swenson, Harley Edwards and Samantha Combs also competed in Dramatic Oral Interpretation, which had 22 total competitors. Swenson finished in 15th place and Edwards placed 17th. Combs finished in 18th place while also competing in the Humorous Oral Interpretation category. In HOI, Combs earned a 23rd place out of 25 total competitors.

Gabe Proctor eared a 15th place finish in Humorous Oral Interpretation.

Fynn Sykut and Connor Whitmer tried the Mock Senate competition in Billings, with 13 other competitors. Sukut earned 10th place and Whitmer finished in 12th place.

"There were many tears at the end of the day! Students said goodbye to friends and really evaluated their season," McGee said. "We, as coaches, are all extremely proud of their hard work and can not wait to see how they do next year. We also would like to congratulate our seniors as they get closer to graduation!"

The end-of-season Awards Banquet in the GHS Library welcomed all team members and their friends and family to get a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes with the Speech & Drama team. Guests were also treated to performances by Swenson, Tarum and Proctor after awards were presented.

The evening concluded with laughter, memories and cake.
