Scottie Girls Place Third at District 2B

Advance to Divisional in Cut Bank

After a disappointing 50-45 loss to Wolf Point in round of the District 2B tournament, the Glasgow girls basketball team rolled over Poplar, 59-16, and Harlem, 67-25, to earn third place and a trip to Cut Bank for the Northern Divisional Tournament Mar. 3-5 in Cut Bank.

Glasgow trailed 8-7 after one quarter in their opening game before tying it 19-19 at the half in what proved to be a tight back-and-forth game. Wolf Point held a one-part margin after 24 minutes of play, 33-32.

Glasgow held the lead with roughly three minutes left in the game, but late turnovers and a surging Wolves team tipped the game in Wolf Point's favor.

Sabrina Harsh led the team in points off the bench, putting in 16 while going 10-for-16 at the free throw line. Abrianna Nielsen added 7 while Daley Aune and Carly Nelson each scored 6 points. Blaire Westby and Tyann Graham put up 5 points a piece. Nielsen, Westby and Aune each had two assists while Graham had one for the Scotties.

Harsh also led in rebounds, pulling down 10 of the team's 27 boards. Graham snagged four, Nelson and Nielsen three each, Westby two and Aune one. Glasgow edged Wolf Point in steals, 12-1. Graham, Aune, Nelson and Harsh each had two takeaways.

The Scotties shot 41.2 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from the line while the Wolves had a 31.8 shot percentage and shot 77.3 percent on free throws.

The loss moved Glasgow into the loser-out game Friday evening, where they faced the Poplar Indians.

Not ready to sacrifice their season, the Scotties hit the hardwood fired up, never allowing Poplar a lead or a tie in the game. They outscored the Indians 19-5 in the opening frame and increased their lead to 36-9 heading into halftime.

The third quarter went the way of the first with Glasgow's defense holding Poplar to 5 points. At the same time, the Scottie offense garnered 19 points. The Scotties outscored the Indians 4-2 in the final eight minutes.

Aune led all scorers with 21 points. Graham added 13, going 9-for-10 at the charity stripe. Harsh went 4-for-6 on field goals and added 11 points. Nielsen and Brielle Partridge added 4 each, Nelson 3, Aspen Stulc 2 and Westby hit a free throw.

Glasgow shot 35.8 from the field and 64.5 on free throws.

Glasgow had 12 assists, led by Westby with three. Graham and Harsh had two each. Nielsen, Aune, Nelson, Tatum Nyquist and Alli Palm added one a piece.

The Scotties pulled down 46 rebounds while the Indians had 24. Aune led in this stat as well with 15, 10 offensive. Harsh had seven and Nielsen four. Partridge had three followed by Westby, Graham, Nelson and Palm with two a piece. Stulc and Stevie Hartwell each had a board in a game where every Scottie suited up made the stat sheet.

The win pitted the Scotties against the Harlem Wildcats for third place. Once again, Glasgow took the lead first thing and held on to it throughout the game, denying Harlem even a tie.

Glasgow scored 14 in the first quarter while giving up only a free throw to the Wildcats. The Scotties built up their lead to 32-14 at the half.

The offensive onslaught continued in the third when Glasgow set the nets on fire with 30 points for a 62-21 lead heading into the final eight minutes. The Scotties also held the margin in fourth, 5-4.

Nielsen powered the Scotties offensively with 19 points, hitting 7-of-11 from the field - including two treys - and going 3-for-3 on free throws. Harsh added 15 points, hitting 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Graham also hit double digits with 10 points. Aune and Nelson added 6 each while Westby connected for 5 points. Stulc, Nyquist and Harwell added a field goal a piece. Aune led in assists with five followed by Nielsen with four.

Glasgow shot 39.3 percent from the field and 73.9 percent from the stripe.

Glasgow pulled down 49 rebounds, 27 offensive, while Wolf Point had 23 total rebounds. Nielsen had 10 rebounds, five at each end. Harsh snagged nine, Graham seven, Westby six, Nyquist four and Stulc three. Aune, Nelson and Partridge each had two rebounds while Palm and Hart well grabbed one each.

The Malta M-ettes claimed the 2B title with 63-43 win over Harlem in their first game and a 51-43 victory over Wolf Point in the championship game.

Harlem, Glasgow, Wolf Point and Malta advance to the Northern B Divisional Tournament in Cut Bank after a week off. The Divisional Tournament will run Thursday through Saturday, Mar. 3-5. Glasgow, as the third place finisher, will take on the #2 see out of the 1B. A bracket and game times should be available in next week's Courier.
