Sheriff Tom Boyer announced via press release that Darryl Big Leggins, age 55, of Hays Montana died while in custody Feb. 10 at the Valley County Detention Center. Big Leggins was being held under contract for the Montana Department of Corrections.
Sheriff Boyer requested the Phillips County Coroner and the Montana Department of Justice to investigate the death.
Sheriff Boyer said, “At this point in the investigation it appears Mr. Big Leggins died from natural causes. I have asked for an independent coroner and investigator to make sure we are transparent and eliminate any perceived conflict surrounding this unfortunate event.”
The decedent will be taken to Billings for an autopsy at the State Crime Lab and a coroner’s inquest will be held at a later date as required by law.
