The Glasgow girls basketball team picked up two big conference wins in a pair of home games this past weekend. They won a 62-57 overtime thriller against Harlem Jan. 14 and then decisively defeated Poplar 58-36 Jan. 15.
Glasgow went down 15-8 at the end of the first quarter against Harlem but poured in points in the next eight minutes. The Scotties outscored the Wildcats 19-10 to take a two-point lead into the half.
Harlem cut the lead to one point in the third, 41-40 and closed the gap by outscoring Glasgow 10-9 in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats had already ran into foul trouble, sending the Scotties into double bonus free throws on all fouls and Glasgow did not waste their advantage in the extra four minutes. Eight of Glasgow's 12 points came at the charity stripe. Meanwhile, their defense held Harlem to 7 points for a 62-57 victory.
While Harlem racked up 23 fouls in the game, Glasgow held their infractions to 12, seven in the second half. Blaire Westby was called for four fouls while Tyann Graham and Sabrina Harsh were called for three each. Carly Nelson and Aspen Stulc had one foul a piece.
Free throws were the offensive key to Glasgow's win with the Scotties hitting 19 of 25 bonus attempts. Harsh led the team, going 14-for-17 at the charity stripe.
Defensively, a strong full court press led to a number of Harlem turnovers and Glasgow baskets. Graham had seven steals for the Scotties while Harsh added three and Daley Aune and Nelson had a takeaway each.
Aune notched six assists for Glasgow followed by Nelson with three, Stulc and Graham with two and Harsh with one. Harsh led in rebounds with 13. Nelson had eight, Westby seven, Aune five, Graham four, Abrianna Nielsen three, Stulc two and Tatum Nyquist one.
In JV action, the Scotties also went to overtime but fell 32-28.
Nyquist led Glasgow's balanced scoring with 7 points. Harsh added 6, Macy Martin 5 and Tanae Baker 3 points. Brielle Partridge, Stulc and Stevie Hartwell scored 2 each and Allie Palm scored 1 point.
Saturday afternoon, the Indians claimed a 14-10 lead after the first quarter. The Scotties, however, pulled out their full court press and turned up the offensive pressure with strong performances in the second and third quarters. Glasgow outscored Poplar 18-6 and 22-6 to carry a 50-26 lead into the final eight minutes of play. The Indians put up 10 points to the Scotties 8 in the fourth quarter.
Glasgow held their fouls to 13 in the game, seven in the second half. Nielsen and Nelson were called for three each while Graham had two fouls. Westby, Aune, Stulc, Rush and Nyquist were called for one infraction a piece.
Poplar had 18 fouls in the game, resulting in 23 bonus attempts for Glasgow. The Scotties went 14-for-23 at the line, again led by Harsh who connected on nine of 11 free throws. Graham hit three of four of her chances.
Harsh also led in rebound with 18 for Glasgow. Aune, Nelson and Graham grabbed five boards each. Nielsen led in assists with five, followed by Aune and Westby with three each, and Nelson with two.
Defensively Aune stole the ball seven times. Graham had six steals followed by Nielsen with five and Westby with three.
In JV action, the Scotties ran away with their game, 53-28, after establishing a 22-7 lead in the first quarter.
Nyquist and Hartwell each scored 10 points to lead Glasgow. Piper Johnson added 8, Riley Evenson-Glasoe 8, and Martin 4 points. Hayden Green scored 3 while Emily See, Partridge, Stulc and Eve Sone added a field goal each. Palm hit one from the free throw line.
The Scottie C squad traveled to Luster Jan. 10 to play the Lions JV team. Glasgow fell to Lustre Christian 35-24.
See poured in 10 points for Glasgow followed by Stone with 6. Kheyerah Bilger scored 5 and Kat Malnaa added 4 points. Summer Strommen, Addi Zoanni, Emmah Mix and Amber Pearson each put in a field goal.
Lustre was led by Aubri Holtzrichter with 17 points and Hannah Brown with 7.
Glasgow travels to Scobey Thursday, Jan. 20. The boys C squad plays at 3 p.m. in the small gym. The JV girls play at 3 p.m. in the big gym, followed by boys JV at 4:30 p.m. Varsity girls play at 6 p.m. and the boys varsity game begins at 7:30 p.m. Varsity games will be on Nemont TV and KLTZ radio.
Friday, Jan. 21, the Scotties will be in Sidney to play the Eagles. The girls C squad plays at 1 p.m. and the girls JV at 2:30 p.m. in the SMS gym. Boys C Squad plays at 1 and boys JV at 2:30 p.m. in the SHS gym. Boys varsity plays in the SHS gym at 4 p.m. followed by the girls varsity at 5:30 p.m. Varsity games will be on the NFHS network and KLTZ radio.
