North Country Girls Continue Win Streak

The North Country girls' basketball team is rolling through the season, racking up win after win. The Mavericks defeated the Scotties 45-23 in Glasgow on Thursday and downed the Spartans 52-17 in Scobey Friday night.

North Country established their lead in the first eight minutes, going up 19-8 at the buzzer. Glasgow outscored their guests 5-4 in the second quarter for a 10-point Mavericks' lead at the half.

Back on the hardwood North Country put up 7 in the third while holding Glasgow to 4 points. A strong fourth quarter by North Country saw them hold Glasgow to 6 points while scoring 15 to cement their win.

Both teams played relatively clean games. North Country had 12 fouls, seven in the second half while Glasgow held their infractions to nine, six in the second half.

North Country's Kora LaBrie and Kendall Scheffelmear were called for three fouls each. Mattea McColly and Paige Wasson had two a piece and Zandora Longtree and Jaycee Erickson each had one.

J. Erickson put up 14 points for North Country with three shots from downtown. Teagan Erickson and Wasson added 11 each, both with a trey. Longtree scored 5 points on a three-pointer and two free throws. LaBrie and Scheffelmear added 2 points each.

T. Erickson pulled down 12 rebounds and had five blocks in the win. J. Erickson had two assists and and four rebounds for the Mavericks.

In JV action, the Glasgow girls fell to the Mavericks 36-26.

North Country led 11-3 after one and 25-8 at the half. The Mavericks outscored the Scotties 9-5 in the third. Glasgow rallied in the final quarter with 13 points while holding North Country to 2 but were unable to overcome the Mavericks's lead.

Glasgow had six fouls in the game, four in the second half. North Country was called for 12 fouls, seven in the second half.

North Country's Josie Brown had four fouls. Jessa Erickson and Ava Hanley had two each. Sammie Wisher, Shelbi LaBrie, Cienna Strommen and Zora Holt were called for one foul a piece.

Wisher led the Mavericks with 10 points. LaBrie and Brown added 8 each. Strommen and Erickson scored 4 points a piece and Hanley added 2.

Friday night the Mavericks were in Scobey where they easily handled the Spartans. A slow start to the first quarter resulted in a 5-3 lead for North Country. The Mavericks turned up the heat in the second quarter, draining 15 points while shutting out the home team.

North Country built on their lead, outscoring Scobey by a 10-point margin in the third 17-7. Carrying a 37-13 lead into the final quarter, the Mavericks did not let up. The defense held the Spartans to 4 points while offensively they added another 15 points to their score.

J. Erickson led North Country with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists. T. Erickson added 11 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Wasson put up another 11 points. K. Labrie and Longtree had 3 each and McColly and Scheffelmear scored 2 a piece.

Opheim's Carrie Taylor led the unified Scobey-Opheim team with 9 points.

The Mavericks travel to Lustre this Friday, Jan. 14. The girls varsity will play at 6 p.m. followed by the boys varsity at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, North Country hosts Frazer in Hinsdale with the girls varsity game at 6 p.m., followed by the boys varsity at 7:30 p.m.
