The Lustre Christian girls basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Bainville, 51-48, on the road, Dec. 20 after the Bulldogs battled back in the fourth quarter. The Spartans were in Lustre the following night and took a decisive 48-10 win back to Scobey after holding Lustre’s leading scorers to single digits.
Monday night, Bainville led after the first 10-6, with 4 of Lustre’s first-quarter points coming at the charity stripe.
The Lions roared back in the second 8 minutes powered by Alexa Reddig, who put up 14 of the team’s 21 second-quarter points. Lustre held Bainville to 14 at the same time to take a 27-24 lead into halftime.
Both teams scored 13 points when they returned to the court as Lustre held onto their three-point lead heading into the final quarter. Bainville battled hard though, putting up 14 points to Lustre’s 8, as they overcame the Lions’ lead to win 51-48.
Reddig led all scorers with 17 points, including two three-pointers and going 5-for-6 on free throws. Grace Brown added 11 points for the home team, hitting five of seven free throws. Aubri Holzrichter scored 8 and Abby Olfert added 2 points, both from the charity stripe.
Lustre was called for 15 fouls, nine in the second half. Brown was called for four while Olfert, Reddig and Holzrichter had three infractions each. Hannah Brown was called for one foul.
Tuesday’s game against Scobey proved to be more one-sided as the visiting Spartans held Lions’ leading scorer Reddig to 3 points.
She scored Lustre’s only bucket of the first quarter while Scobey racked up 14 points. The Spartans added 8 more points in the second while holding Lustre to three free throws.
Scobey shut Lustre out in the third quarter as they added 12 points to the visitors’ side of the scoreboard. Lustre connected for 5 points in the final eight minutes of play while Scobey kept their scoring streak alive with 14 points.
Holzrichter had 4 points for the Lions, 2-for-2 at the line. Reddig and Jaden Gibson both added 3 points.
Lustre played a clean game with only five total fouls, two of which came in the second half. As a team, they went 4-for-5 on their bonus point attempts.
Opheim’s Carrie Taylor, playing for the Unified Scobey-Opheim team, scored 14 points to lead all scorers, including a three-pointer. She had four fouls in the game.
The Lustre Christian Lions return to the hardwood Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, when they host the Frazer Bearcubs with games beginning at 5:30 p.m.
