When 'B' is Better than 'A'

Scottie Girls Down Glendive and Sidney

The Glasgow girls basketball team turned in two big wins, downing two Class A teams, in their home opener week. The Scotties ran over the Glendive Red Devils on Thursday, 49-23, then took Sidney to a double overtime on Friday in their come-from-behind 63-57 victory.

Glasgow took a 10-8 lead on Thursday over Glendive after the first when Tyann Graham was fouled on her attempted buzzer beater and sunk 2-of-3 at the free throw line. Abrianna Nielsen drained a three-pointer to start the second and kick off Glasgow's 17-point quarter. Much of the Scotties' offense came from a strong full court press and defense which forced Devils' turnovers. Glasgow successfully converted on a number of fast breaks as they took control of the game.

In fact, Glasgow kept Glendive off the scoreboard until 40.6 seconds before the halftime. Glendive fouls also sent Glasgow to the charity stripe towards the end of the first and the Scotties went 4-for-4 at the line in the second quarter.

The Scotties kept the Devils off the scoreboard until late in the third quarter, holding the visitors to 4 while the home team put up 7 points. Glasgow put up 15 in the final eight minutes of play while holding Glendive to 6 points.

Daley Aune led all players in scoring with 16 points. Graham put up 10 while Nielsen and Carly Nelson each added 7 points. Tatum Nyquist scored 4, Brielle Partridge 3 and Blaire Westby 2 points.

Glendive ran up 17 fouls in the game, 10 in the second half. Glasgow held their fouls to 11, five in the second half. Nelson, Aspen Stulc and Nyquist were called for two each while Nielsen, Westby, Graham, Aune and Partridge were called for one a piece. Glasgow went 10-for-16 at the free throw line.

Aune led the team in rebounds with 11 total, seven defensive. Nielsen and Westby had four boards each. Westby led the team in assists with six. Nielsen, Aune and Partridge each had two assists. Graham led the team in steals with five. Aune had three and Nielsen and Westby each added two.

The JV squad also won, defeating the Red Devils 25-16 with balanced scoring. Partridge led the team with 6 points. Tanae Baker added 5, and Riley Evenson-Glasoe and Nyquist had 4 points each. Macy Martin, Addison Young and Stulc all added a field goal.

The C Squad fell 31-25 to Glendive. Eve Stone led the squad with 11 points. Hayden Green added 6, Emily See 4 and Summer Strommen and Phyllis Greybear had 2 points each.

Glasgow faced a tougher battle Friday when they took on the Sidney Eagles. Glasgow lit up the scoreboard first after Nelson got the opening tipoff to Aune, who immediately converted on a layup. The two teams played a tight first half with each forcing turnovers on their opponents.

Sidney carried a 4-point lead, 22-18, into the half.

Back on the hardwood, Glasgow had tied the game 49 seconds into the third quarter. A field goal and bonus free throw from Aune gave Glasgow the lead as the Scotties took over the game. But every time Glasgow built up their lead, Sidney would battle back.

After a back-and-forth second half, the teams stood at 45 points each, sending them into a four-minute overtime. The bonus period started exactly the same as the game: a Nelson tip to Aune for a layup. But at the end of the four minutes, the score stood even at 49-49. Sidney won the tip-off but Nielsen scored first for Glasgow. She put in 8 points in the two overtimes to help propel Glasgow to their victory.

Graham, Nelson and Aune added points from the charity stripe as took the win.

Aune led all scorers with 23 points, including going 5-for-5 at the line. Graham added 13 points, going 3-for-4 on free throws. Nelson added 10 points, 4-for-4 at the line, as did Nielsen. Westby scored 5 and Nyquist added 2 points.

Sidney racked up 223 fouls in the game, 14 in the second half. Glasgow held their fouls to 14, split evenly between the halves. Nelson was called for four while Nielsen and Graham had three each. Aune had two fouls while Westby and Nyquist had one a piece.

Nelson and Aune each pulled down eight rebounds while Nielsen had seven, Graham five and Westby four. Westby again led in assists with five. Nielsen had three, Nelson two and Graham one. Westby also led in steals with five. Nielsen and Graham had three takeaways a piece and Nelson had one.

The JV team lost by a score of 35-25. Stats were unavailable at press time.

The C Squad lost a close game by a score of 31-28. Stone again led the team in scoring, this tie with 14 points. Addi Zoanni added 7, including a trey. Green scored 4 and Piper Johnson added 3 points.

The C Squad hosted the Malta M-ettes Monday evening after press time.
