NC Boys 0-2 in Fort Benton

North Country Mavericks

The young North Country boys basketball dropped both games at the Wooden Memorial Tournament this past weekend in Fort Benton. They fell to the host team 46-22 Friday and were defeated 58-29 by Winifred/Roy Saturday morning.

Fort Benton took an 18-5 lead over North Country after the first eight minutes. The Longhorns aded 9 points in second while the Mavericks scored another 5 points. Fort Benton scored 10 in the third and 9 in the fourth while holding North Country to 7 and 5 points.

Trey Johnson scored 11 points to lead the Mavericks. Aiden Albus had 5, Blaine Downing 3, Taylor Mogan 2 and Coy Bowman 1 point.

The Mavs kept their fouls to 10 total, with four in the second half. Downing was called for three and Johnson and Mogan had two each. Korbyn Skobinna, Kade Strommen and Marshall Caves had one a piece. North Country went 4-for-11 on free throws.

Winifred/Roy pulled away from North Country in the second and third quarters on Saturday, putting up 21 and 20 points. The Mavs were held to single digits in each quarter, scoring 4, 7, 9 and 9 points in each quarter.

Johnson had 18 points for North Country, including a three-pointer. Albus added 6 points, Mogan 3 and Bowman 2 points.

The Mavericks were called for 15 fouls, nine in the first half. Strommen was called for four, Albus and Johnson each had three, and Mogan and Bowman were called for two a piece. The Mavs went 1-for-4 on free throws.

The North Country Mavericks will be in Dodson this Friday, Dec. 17, for a 7:30 p.m. varsity boys game. Saturday, Dec. 18, they host Circle in Saco with a 5:30 p.m. varsity boys game. Tuesday, Dec. 21, they travel to Nashua for a 7:30 p.m. boys varsity game.
