The Glasgow Ice Dawgs high school team claimed two wins Saturday in Butte over Salmon High School. Glasgow won the first game by a score of 5-4 Saturday morning, then routed their opponents 7-0 that evening.
"This weekend we played our fifth and sixth games of the year, and showed so much improvement already," Dawgs' captain Colter Barnett said. "Success comes much easier once our team begins to work together like we did this weekend!"
The Ice Dawgs leapt out to an early lead in game one, going up 3-1 when the buzzer sounded at the end of the first. Salmon scored first, just 40 seconds into play, but Glasgow took it in stride. Trevor Dulaney kicked off the Dawgs' scoring at 10:27. Barnett, assist Sam Knierim, doubled the Dawgs goals at 3:09 and Michael Hoyer added their third with 56 seconds left in the period with an assist from Dulaney.
Glasgow added two more goals in the second period before Salmon found the back of the net again. Peyton Hubbard netted a short-handed goal at 9:34, with assists from Barnett and Hoyer, with Zevin Kummerfeldt in the sin bin for unsportsmanlike conduct. Hoyer scored the Dawgs' fifth and final goal at 3:28 on an assist from Tatum Hansen.
Salmon put the biscuit past Glasgow netminder Aidin Wilkowski with 36 seconds left before intermission. They added two goals late in the third, but were unable to overcome Glasgow's lead.
Wilkowski faced 31 shots while in the crease for the Dawgs while the Glasgow offense threw 42 pucks at the Salmon goaltender.
Shots were even in the first period with 13 at each end. Glasgow owned the puck in the second with 17 shots on goal compared to eight for Salmon. In the final period, Salmon had 10 attempts and Glasgow had 12 shots on net.
Salmon was called for four penalties while Glasgow had five infractions. In addition to Kummerfeldt's second-period penalty, Hubbard sat in the period for interference. In the third, Knierim was called for interference and Gage Siefert drew a 2-and-10 for holding and mouth guard.
The second game was all Glasgow, who made good on seven of 46 shots on goal while shutting out Salmon.
Barnett started the offensive onslaught at 15:27 in the first period. Hubbard took the score to 2-0 at 4:59 with help from Barnett and Hoyer on a Dawgs' power play. Barnett closed out Glasgow's first period scoring at 3:06.
Siefert netted his first goal in the second period at 8:15. Hansen found the back of the net while the Dawgs were short-handed with an assist from Barnett.
The Dawgs made good on another power play in the third at 12:07 when Siefert, assist Hoyer, scored Glasgow's sixth goal. Barnett got past the Salmon goaltender at 9:22 for a 7-0 Glasgow win.
Wilkowski earned the win in net for Glasgow, turning away 21 Salmon shots.
Salmon was called for five penalties, giving up two power-play goals to Glasgow. The Dawgs served time for seven infractions. Barnett was called for roughing in the first.
Kummerfeldt, interference; Hubbard, roughing; Dulaney, mouth guard; and Mason Hunter, elbow and unsportsmanlike, served time in the second period. Hoyer served time for interference in the third period.
Barnett said, "It looks like it's going to be a great season ahead of us and I cannot wait to see how the rest of the year goes!"
