Glasgow Boys Third at 26th Annual Scottie Invitational
The 26th Annual Scottie Wrestling Invitational proved to be an historical and a record-setting weekend. Twenty-seven schools sent 275 wrestlers to the event, including 39 girls taking advantage of the second year of girls wrestling being a sanctioned sport in Montana.
Glasgow put 14 grapplers on their home mats, 13 boys and one girl. The Scottie boys team claimed a third-place finish with 123 points. Senior Kyler Hallock led the boys team with a second-place finish and 23 points. Shalynn Pedersen earned fourth place in the girls 126/132 pound class.
The action kicked off at noon on Friday on the four mats set up in the Scottie gym. The Glasgow grapplers facd Billings Central in their first of three duals on the day. The notoriously tough Class A Rams beat Glasgow by a two-point margin, 36-34 in Round 1.
In Round 3, the Scotties went up against their Class B rivals, the Huntley Project Red Devils. The two teams have held the top slots in the Eastern Division and State Tournaments the last couple years. In their first head-on match of the 2021-2022 season, Huntley Project took the dual 40-21.
Notably, Glasgow took three big wins in the dual. Devon Nesbitt defeated Garrett Sholley in the 160-lb class and brother Damien Nesbitt beat Wylee Lindeen in the 170-lb class. Kyler Hallock defeated Stran Selman in their first bout of the weekend.
Glasgow's only dual win came at the expense of the Hardin Bulldogs. The Scotties won the head-to-head match by a score of 40 to 27, ending the day 1-2 in duals. Rounds two, four and six had Glasgow grapplers hitting the mixer matches.
Following a short break, the wrestlers returned to the mats to start the individual tournament. Glasgow held a third-place position at the conclusion of Friday's competitions with 42 points. Only defending Class A state champion Sidney, 48 points, and 2021 Class B runner-up Huntley Project, 44 points, stood in front of Glasgow.
The Scottie wrestlers returned to the mats Saturday morning in a bid to improve their standing. At the end of the day, Glasgow had nine boys and one girl in the top 10, with four boys and Pedersen making the podium.
Second-year high school wrestler Pedersen made it to the third-place match in the girls' 126/132-lb class where Lilian Schubarth (Sims) won by fall over the Scottie.
Freshman Michael King was pinned by Miles Wills of Hardin, giving King an eighth-place finish in the 145-lb class. Senior Austin Hughes also finished in eighth place after being pinned by Colter Ball of Fort Benton.
Junior Hunter Crum earned a seventh-place finish by pinning Sidney's Nathan Romo in 2:46 in the 205-lb category. Fellow junior Jack Cornwell also finished in seventh place. He defeated Sean Ward of Fairfield 6-2 in the 138-lb class.
Senior Jake Kuka took sixth place in the 120-lb class. He was defeated 8-6 by Deegan Caranza of Sidney.
Junior Mason Donaldson earned a podium position after finishing in fourth place in the 152-lb class. He was defeated by a score of 7-1 by Glendive's Espyn Hostetler. "I'm excited to be back on the mat with this group of guys," Donaldson said of his Scottie teammates.
Senior Devon Nesbitt was also defeated by a 7-1 score for a fourth-place finish. His loss came in the 160-lb class at the hands of Garrett Sholley, who avenged his first-day loss to the Scottie. Devon Nesbitt expressed confidence in his Scottie team, saying he feels like the season will go well for Glasgow. As for the Invitational, he said, "I learned there is some good competition for us as we look forward to state."
Damien Nesbitt faced off against Miguel Perez of Fairfield in the 170-lb class third place match. He pinned the Eagle in just 38 seconds to earn his third-place podium slot. "I fell really good about the season [though] there is a lot of work still to be done," he told the Courier. "I learned that if you have the right mindset going into a match that nothing will stop you from winning."
Hallock and Selman, two of the favorites in the Class B 205 weight class, faced off again in the championship bout. A late surge from the Red Devil saw him go up in points at the end of the full match. Hallock fell by a 6-3 decision after six minutes.
"I feel like our team has a lot to work on but it's still early in the season," said the Scottie stand-out. "I learned from this weekend that a lot of us are capable of doing things, we just don't get the urgency to do those things, including myself."
At the conclusion of day two, the top three teams from day one stood in the same positions. The Sidney Eagles claimed first place with 232.5 points. Huntley Project had 166 points for second place. Glasgow's 123 points placed them in third.
The Glasgow Middle School Invitational is this Saturday, Dec. 18, in the GHS gymnasium at 11 a.m.
The Glasgow JV wrestling team will be attending the Fort Benton Mixer Thursday evening, Dec. 16, scheduled for 5 p.m. The varsity grapplers will be attending the 44th Annual CMR Invitational Friday and Saturday, Dec. 17-18, at Walt Currie Memorial at Great Falls High.
