19U Ice Dawgs 2-0 in Home Opener

The Glasgow 19U Ice Dawgs team took the 19 and under age rule and ran with it again this season, suiting up a number of players who fall well below high school age. But the age difference did not factor into the girls' first two games this season as they defeated Butte Copper Kings at the Valley Event Center. Glasgow won 3-2 Saturday evening and 5-2 Sunday morning.

Glasgow took a 3-0 lead after the first period of play Saturday, with all three captains finding the back of the net. Captain Tatum Provencher scored just 12 seconds in on an assist from assistant captain Kylie Lagerquist. Assistant captain Tori Pehlke put the puck past the Kings' goalie on an assist from Charlsey Rixford at 12:33. Pehlke assisted on the final Dawgs goal, of the period and the game, at 8:59 when Lagerquist scored her first of the season.

Butte scored once in the second and once in the third, but new goaltender Delaney Rixford fended off further attempts to tie the game.

Glasgow dominated puck control throughout the game, firing 53 shots at the Butte netminder, while D. Rixford turned away 21 other shots at her net.

The Dawgs were called for the only two infractions in the game. Lagerquist served time for tripping in the first and Pehlke was called for interference in the second.

Sunday morning, the game started slower, with both team posting goose eggs at the end of the first. Provencher kicked off the scoring action in the second period at 10:06, taking advantage of a Dawgs' power play. Lagerquist was credited with the assist. She kept the action going for Glasgow at 5:28, scoring with an assist from Pehlke. Butte put a goal on the board at 3:43, cutting Glasgow's lead in half going into intermission.

Lagerquist, assist Provencher, found the back of the net first in the third period, but the Kings cut the Dawgs' lead down to one at 5:46. Provencher netted the final two goals of the game to secure the win for the Dawgs. She scored at 3:34, assist Molly Whitmer, and put the hat trick goal in the net with 49.1 seconds left in the game with assists from Ava Lloyd and Lagerquist.

Glasgow again dominated puck control, firing 59 shots at the Butte netminder. D. Rixford faced only 22 attempts on her home during three periods of play. Butte was called for four infractions and Glasgow served time for three penalties. Provencher was called for roughing in the first and interference in the second. M. Whitmer served a team penalty for too many players on the ice in the first.

The girls have this weekend off and will return to the ice with games in Flathead Friday and Saturday, Dec. 17-18, and in Havre, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 18-19.
