Scotties Ace Conference

Enter District Tourney as No. 1 Seed

The Glasgow Scottie volleyball team is headed into the District 2B tournament as the number one seed after posting a perfect 8-0 record in conference play for the third year running. Coach Somer Hoerster's team finished the regular season with an 11-2 overall record.

"I'm happy that we ended the season with two big wins over conference opponents," she said after the Scotties downed the Malta M-ettes at home last Thursday and defeated the Wolf Point Wolves on the road Saturday.

Glasgow's win over Malta came on Senior Night before a raucous home crowd. Malta managed to take one game in the Dawg Pound, but Glasgow was the victor 25-19, 17-25, 25-22, 28-26 after an eight-point comeback in set three after going down 22-17. The Scotties served up an exciting match with numerous and lengthy volleys while the home crowd enthusiastically supported the team in the conference rivalry.

"Malta has improved a lot over the course of the season," Hoerster said. "They were tough and got a game off of us – but I was so proud of my girls for playing through some frustrations and fighting to score points. We had some huge plays at crucial times."

Glasgow outpaced Malta in every stat category save digs, with Malta registering 74 digs to Glasgow's 50 in the match. The Scotties notched 42 kills to the M-ettes' 38, 28 blocks to 11, 14 aces to 5, and led in aces 42 to 36.

Abrianna Nielsen led the Scotties in kills with 12 and in aces with 6. Klaire Krumwiede had 8 blocks for Glasgow and Blaire Westby registered 12 digs. Daley Aune racked up 30 assists in the match.

The Scotties' C squad won their match in three sets 25-14, 25-17, 15-10. The JV game went to five sets with Glasgow coming out on top of a hard fought match 26-24, 23-25, 15-13, 14-16, 15-13.

The Scotties traveled to Wolf Point on Saturday for their final regular season match and swept the Wolves 25-22, 25-18, 25-20. Hoerster said, "We started out slow with Wolf Point but after a timeout we got it under control and battled back for that game one win. Then we played much better games two and three."

Glasgow led Wolf Point in four stat categories: kills 27 to 24; blocks 19 to 5; digs 50 to 41 and assists 24-23. Each team put up 8 aces in the match.

Nielsen again led in kills, putting up 8 over the three sets. Krumwiede led in blocks with 10 and in aces with 5. Aune put up 13 digs and 18 assists in leading the Scotties.

Glasgow's C Squad won their match in four sets while the JV Scotties lost their match in four games.

Krumwiede said, "The highlight of the week was definitely beating Wolf Point and battling back with Malta!"

"These matches are exactly what we need to push ourselves to the next level," the Scotties coach said. She added, "The girls have had to fight through a lot this season and they're getting tougher because of it. I am excited for them to play in tournaments."

"The win over Wolf Point was something that I feel kind of gave us a boost as a team," Krumwiede said, "and really made us realize that districts is coming up fast!" She added about the upcoming tournament, "I'm expecting it to be a battle every set. We are needing to come in knowing not anything is for sure. We have to play for each other and trust each other if we wanna be the most efficient and competitive team that we are."

Nielsen, who has enjoyed playing the game she loves with all her friends, said, "I'm expecting some pretty tough competition at the tourney. We are really going to have to play at our best to come out on top. Everyone has really improved this season so it should be fun to see how we do!"

Westby said, "I am looking forward to the match-ups this weekend. I am hoping our team really starts to mesh together and we get some wins."

The Scotties will kick off their post-season play on Friday, Oct. 29, in Wolf Point at the District 2B Tournament. Glasgow's first game will be at 1 p.m. and they will face the winner from that morning's match-up between fourth-seed Wolf Point and fifth-seed Poplar, who play at 10 a.m.
