Defeat Wolves 58-7
The Scotties bounced back from their loss against Malta in grand fashion, defeating the Wolf Point Wolves 58-7 on the road Oct. 22. Glasgow's offense looked as if they'd been covered in grease as they slid through Wolf Point's defense with little to no resistance. The win put the Scotties at 4-1 in conference play with a 7-2 overall record.
"I thought the boys played one heck of a game on Friday," said assistant coach Dylan Hughes. "We didn't get to work on as much of the passing game as I would have liked to, but it's because our backs did such a great job running the ball. Mo's [Fast] 47-yard run was a great way to start the game and really set the tone."
Glasgow took early control of the scoreboard after that big run by Fast. They followed with a quarterback keeper where Mason Donaldson put his offense on the 1-yard line. The Scotties turned to star running back Kyler Hallock who ran in the first of his four touchdowns and tacked on the successful two-point conversion with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Wolves' possession after Hallock's touchdown was quickly interrupted by Ashton Potter, who snagged the interception and returned the ball 22 yards. Glasgow made their way back to the end zone and added a second touchdown when Donaldson connected with Trey Johnson to take a 14-0 lead with five minutes left in the first.
Glasgow increased their lead to 22-0 with 1:24 left in the first on a short Hallock run and a Donaldson-to-Johnson two point conversion.
The Wolves' next possession was interrupted and the game delayed after Wolf Point's Corey Martell took a big hit from Glasgow's Ethan Nickels. When the players returned to the field, Glasgow shut down Wolf Point's offense and made good on their possession. With 26 seconds left in the first, the Scotties went back to their winning strategy, sending Hallock into the red zone and going to him for another successful two-point attempt.
Early in the second quarter, the Scotties started the running clock on runs from Tatum Hansen. Run one saw the sophomore dragging several Wolves on his back as he made for the end zone. Run two saw him cross the goal line untouched. Johnson snagged the pass from Donaldson for the two-point conversion and the 38-0 lead.
With just a couple minutes left in the first, Hallock waltzed his way around a Wolf Point defender for his fourth touchdown of the game. John Wyatt Lawson added the extra two points as the Scotties carried their 46-0 lead into halftime. "Our key to offensive domination is executing what we do and do everything right," Hallock said.
Glasgow continued to pour on in the second half as KJ Ingram took the opening kickoff down the field and over the goal line for his second touchdown return of the season. Devon Nesbitt said the kick return was the highlight of the game for him.
Wolf Point lit up their side of the scoreboard with just under eight minutes left in the third quarter on a nice run to the end zone. A successful kick gave them the point after touchdown to take the score to 52-7.
Ingram returned to the spotlight midway through the fourth quarter when in as quarterback he ran the ball straight up the middle of the field past the Wolves' defense for his second touchdown of the game. Glasgow's 58-7 lead held as the clock ran out. "The most fun was getting to play their varsity with my JV teammates on the field," said Ingram of the game that saw every Scottie in the game.
Starting quarterback Donaldson said, "The win against Wolf Point was a great way to finish out the regular season." He had all 33 passing yards for Glasgow on two passes to Johnson, who had Glasgow's 33 receiving yards.
Hallock led Glasgow's balanced rushing offense with 54 yards on seven carries. Hansen had five carries for 53 yards, followed by Ingram's 52 yards. Fast added 47 yards and Donaldson had 30 yards towards the Scotties' 241 rushing yards. Glasgow racked up 274 total offensive yards.
The Scottie defense also turned in a balanced performance. Jack Cornwell led the team in tackles with seven, followed by Fast with five. Vaughn Miller and Wyatt Babb had four each. Hallock, Hansen, Aiden Hoerster and Lawson had three tackles a piece. Hansen led in tackles for loss with two while Hallock, Mark Eliason, Fast, Johnson, Austin Hughes, Myles Yoakam and Cornwell added one each.
The Scotties forced five turnovers and had six sacks in the game. Hallock, Hansen, Fast and Cornwell each had one sack while Yoakam and Connor Koski combined for one.
Glasgow had two interceptions in the game, a 22-yard gain by Potter and a 14-yard gain from Ingram late in the first half. The Scotties' defense allowed the Wolves only 85 total yards.
Assistant coach Sam Tedrow called the game a "great momentum builder going into the playoffs." He was pleased with the bounce back performance from his guys. "We came out ready to go and played a complete game from start to finish," he said. "Something we haven't been able to do since beating Fairfield." Potter expressed a similar sentiment, "My favorite part of the game is how well we all played together and how high the energy was throughout the entire game ... Our defense played really well and I'm expecting it to continue against Bigfork."
Glasgow finished the season second in the Northern B and secured a second seed for Class B Playoffs. The Scotties will host the Bigfork Vikings this Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. at Scottie Field.
"Bigfork will be another test for our defense as they run an offense similar to Malta," Tedrow told the Courier. "I know our guys will be chomping at the bit to show they can stop an offense like that."
Hallock said, "I expect a good team on Bigfork. I've watched them play and they are good. We have to execute our offense and stop them on defense." Nesbitt echoed his teammate, "I expect them to put up a good battle going into the first round of playoffs and we have to be ready to play."
"We have a new season starting this week and I'm really looking forward to a great week of practice with these guys," D. Hughes said. "Saturday should set up for a great game between the Scotties and Bigfork."
Ingram said the team is excited to play a playoff game at home with their crowd. Potter said he expects a competitive game from an aggressive Bigfork team. Donaldson said, "I feel like this team is ready for the playoffs and I'm excited to see what we can do."
