Face Mustangs Friday at Home
Glasgow defeated the Conrad Cowboys this past Friday night to add another win to their impressive 2021 season. The Scotties took the game 30-8 to improve their record to a perfect 3-0 in the Northern B, 6-1 overall.
The Scotties took a 16-0 lead at the half and increased the margin to 22-0 in the third quarter. Conrad lit up the scoreboard midway through the final quarter, but Glasgow had the last word late in the game.
The two teams made quick work of the first quarter in a defensive battle in which neither team managed to cross the goal line. The first 12 minutes ended after the Cowboys intercepted a throw by Glasgow quarterback Mason Donaldson.
Making good use of the rushing game, Glasgow marched down the field in the second quarter, powered by big runs from Kyler Hallock and a quarterback keeper from Donaldson, putting the Scotties just shy of the goal line. Hallock put Glasgow on the scoreboard with the clock reading 9:24 in the second quarter with a touchdown and a successful two-point attempt.
The ball was briefly back in Cowboy hands, but a bad snap resulted in a fumble and Glasgow recovery. Senior Gage Siefert made a quick return trip to the end zone to score the Scotties' second touchdown of the game 14 seconds after their first. Donaldson connected with Jack Cornwell for the two-point conversion.
Glasgow started the second half with another fumble recovery which they successfully converted into points. Hallock carried the ball from the 40-yard line into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game to improve Glasgow's lead to 22-0 with 10:42 on the clock in the third.
Conrad finally made good on a possession in the red zone, scoring their first and only touchdown with 6:32 remaining in the game. Their two-point conversion was successful to make the score 22-8.
Not content with their lead, Glasgow marched the ball the other way. Hallock broke a tackle and forced his way into the end zone for a touchdown. The Scotties stuck with that strategy, giving Hallock the ball for the two-point attempt. The Scottie senior did not disappoint and increased his team's lead to 30-8 with 2:42 remaining.
In stark contrast to their earlier games, Glasgow relied on their rushing game to take down Conrad while playing without some key names. Of the Scotties' 211 offensive yards, all but six came on rushes.
Senior running back Hallock led the charge for Glasgow, carrying the ball 21 times in the game for 148 yards. Donaldson added 56 yards on five carries. Glasgow's only passing yards came on a six-yard connection between Donaldson and Ashton Potter.
Hallock is soaking up the success his team is having this year. "Best part of the game is always winning," he said. "Everyone loves to do that."
"We definitely didn't play our best game but I'm proud of the boys for working through a little adversity and coming home with a win," said assistant coach Dylan Hughes. "Conrad is well coached and they were very well prepared but we never let the game get out of hand."
Fellow assistant coach Sam Tedrow also praised the Conrad coaching staff. "Conrad is a well coached team and going in we knew they would throw some things at us we hadn't seen on film. They came out in a heavy package offensively, making it an extremely physical battle at the line of scrimmage. Our defense adjusted well and held them 1-for-7 in the red zone." He added, "Damien [Nesbitt] was in on every tackle it seemed and big plays from Trey [Johnson] and Mo [Fast] kept them out of the end zone multiple times."
Nesbitt led the Scotties with 18 tackles in the game, including three for loss. Hallock praised his teammate, "I was really impressed with Damien Nesbitt. He had the best game of the year." Johnson also hit double digits in tackles with 10, including 1.5 sacks and a tackle for loss. Siefert and Mark Eliason added nine tackles each.
The Scotties will host their hi-line rivals, the Malta Mustangs this week. Malta brings an undefeated record to the match-up and while Glasgow plans to win, they know it won't come easy.
Hallock said, "From Malta, I expect them to come out hard. We have lost to them for these past few years so it's time we turn it around." The senior leader will be focused on football all week as he looks forward to defeating the Mustangs.
The match this year means more than besting a longtime rival. Austin Hughs said he is looking forward to matching up against the Mustangs. "The biggest game of our season now that we overcame the Fairfield Eagles," he said, "and if we knock out Malta, we will be set to becoming the conference champions." Coach Tedrow said, "Malta will be the biggest test of the season for our defense, a matchup we are really looking forward to."
Nesbitt told the Courier, "I believe that we will win against Malta. Now, I don't think it will be easy and it will be a dog fight til the end, but will all the heart and passion the coaches and our team has, we will come out of the game victorious." And though he expects a fight from Malta, the senior Scottie also noted that the most challenging issues for the Scotties are internal: "fighting through injuries and getting the best people on the field each Friday night."
Siefert said "We are expecting Malta to be coming out ready to play." Quarterback Donaldson said simply, "I'm expecting a battle on Friday night and I expect the Scotties to come out on top."
The dog fight is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m this Friday, Oct. 15 at Scottie Field. Glasgow will honor their senior players prior to the game for Senior Night.
