Scottie Volleyball Serves Up Win on Pink Night

The Scottie volleyball team continued their conference domination this past week, adding two to their win column to improve to 6-0 in the conference play, 8-2 overall. Glasgow took their match against Poplar in three sets on Friday at home, then defeated Harlem in four sets to win that match on the road.

Glasgow took down the Poplar Indians 25-6, 25-12, 25-18 in Scottie gymnasium. Decked out in pink uniforms, the Scotties owned the floor from the pre-match "Serve Game" for Pink Night to the final serve.

The Scotties racked up 18 kills, three blocks, 17 aces, 10 digs and 15 assists in the match. Abrianna Nielsen had six kills to lead Glasgow. Klaire Krumwiede had two blocks for the Scotties. Samantha Tryan and Carly Nelson each had six aces in win and Tryan had three digs to lead Glasgow. Daley Aune led the team in assists with eight.

Tryan said the most challenging part of the Scotties' season so far "would have to be all of us trying to trust each other and love each other. We have some things to learn and we need to take advantage of that now."

The Scottie JV team also won in three sets, 25-16, 25-13, 15-8.

On Saturday in Harlem, the Wildcats took the Scotties to four sets but Glasgow came out on top 25-14, 25-14, 25-27, 25-19. Glasgow racked up 39 kills in the match, 25 blocks, 11 aces, 45 digs and 33 assists.

Nelson led the team in kills with 12. Krumwiede had 11 blocks to lead all players and Nielsen led all players in aces with seven. Blaire Westby was also a match leader, racking up 14 digs in the match. Aune notched 18 assists in the four sets to lead all players in that stat category.

Glasgow's C-squad won their match in three games and the JV team won their match in five sets.

Krumwiede said communication has been an issue for the team though she also found the positive. "These past couple of weeks we have been really struggling with communication," she said. "But [Saturday] night I think something really clicked in all of us and we all realized we need to play for each other and with each other."

The Scotties have had to adjust to some unexpected rotation changes this season as players' roles develop and change. Krumwiede told the Courier head coach Somer Hoerster has coached the team through all kinds of rotations this year to prepare them for uncomfortable situations on the court and the team is adjusting to the necessary changes. "We have a really well-rounded team and I trust my teammates," she said. "They are all able to play in any position if it's asked of them."

Despite the obstacles the Scotties have faced this season, team members remain positive. Tryan said, "The most rewarding would have to be not losing a conference game in about three years. That gives us a confidence boost and something to build off of."

"We played well as a team and everyone is settling into their roles," said Graham. "We have some good conference games coming up and we need to focus on them and get the wins."

With only two weekends left in the regular season, the Scotties are looking ahead to post-season action. Hoerster said, "Overall I'm somewhat happy with the wins. I'm not happy with the number of unforced errors we had against Harlem, which led to the one game loss. We missed too many serves and had way too many hitting errors." As Glasgow looks to extend their 2021 play, Hoerster is looking for her team to step up their level of play. "We need to push ourselves harder and have higher expectations. This is all in trying to prepare for November."

Tryan and Krumwiede are looking forward to the remainder of the volleyball season and their team's growth. "I'm looking forward to districts mostly," Tryan said. "I know we can make it further and I'm excited to get their with my teammates."

"I'm really just looking forward to playing more teams that we haven't played much with," Krumwiede said. "It's gonna be a good season and I'm excited to keep playing with my teammates and seeing what the season brings us."

The Scotties will travel to Sidney for two days of action this week, playing matches at the Sidney Invitational Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15 and 16.
