Scotties Down Eagles

The Glasgow Scottie volleyball team racked up two more wins this past week, including a Homecoming victory over the Sidney on Oct. 2. The Scotties grounded the Eagles 25-21, 29-27, 25-12 in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

The win came after an intra-county match-up against North Country on Sept. 30. The Scotties downed the Mavericks in four sets 25-21, 25-12, 24-26, 25-22. Glasgow notched 29 kills, 19 blocks, 22 aces, 32 digs and 26 assists in their win.

Abrianna Nielsen and Carly Nelson each had nine kills in leading the Scotties. Nelson had eight blocks and Nielsen had six aces for Galsgow. Blaire Westby racked up 10 digs in the game. Daley Aune and Tyann Graham each had 12 assists in the victory.

Against Sidney, Glasgow had 27 kills, 24 blocks, 13 aces, 36 digs and 25 assists. Nielsen led all players in kills with nine and in aces with five. Nelson had eight blocks, also leading all players. Westby notched 12 digs in the Scotties' win. Aune led all players with 13 assists.

The Scottie C squad and JV teams both won their matches in five sets against Sidney.

Coach Somer Hoerster said the highlight of the week for her was "having each kid contribute and have some individual successes to help their team get the wins."

Westby said, "The best part of my weekend was definitely seeing our team come together and work hard to get the win." She noted the Scotties have improved greatly in many aspects- of their game as the season has progress while highlighting the team's recent strength in solid defense. She added, "We continue to push through the hard times and focus on not giving up."

Hoerster also noted her team's defense while struggling with health issues this season. She said the team has had to find alternate ways to put points on the scoreboard. The team has earned points primarily through serving and Hoerster added, "...we also had some incredible defensive play [Saturday] from Tyann and Blaire. That was a huge help in our win against Sidney."

Looking forward, Coach Hoerster wants to see her girls play the way she knows they can if they are able to come together in a solid rotation and play with confidence. "We need to start demanding higher levels of play from ourselves and our teammates if we're going to get where we want to be in November," she added.

Glasgow hosts the Poplar Indians this Friday, Oct. 8 for Pink Night in Scottie gymnasium. JV action will start at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, the Scotties travel to Harlem.
