Rout Roundup 44-7
The Glasgow Scottie football team bounced back in a big way Saturday, defeating Roundup 44-7 in an offensive rout. Co-captain Austin Hughes told the Courier, "The key for our success in Roundup was staying patient, calm, and executing the play." Co-captain Mo Fast credited the run game, "I think the key was just the way we were able to run the ball so well."
Trey Johnson said, "We kept our cool during some tight spots in the game and were able to communicate very well."
When asked what the team did for their win, Coach Patrick Barnett, a man of few words, said, "Execute."
Glasgow lit up the scoreboard for the first time with only 1:16 left in the first quarter of play. Tatum Hansen forced his way into the end zone on the left side with a short four-yard run. His touchdown came after quarterback Mason Donaldson ran the football 55 yards to put the Scotties in the red zone. Hansen added the extra two points with a conversion run up the middle.
The Scotties continued their domination in the second quarter when Johnson scored their second touchdown. Donaldson avoided the defensive rush to find Johnson again for the extra two points giving Glasgow the 16-0 lead with 5:23 left in the first half.
Far from done, Donaldson then found Mo Fast with a 9-yard toss for a third Scottie touchdown. Glasgow again went to Hansen for the extra two and the sophomore bulldozed his way through the middle to advance the Scottie lead to 24-0 with 3:56 left in the second quarter.
Back on the field for the second half, Glasgow continued to tear up the turf. Running back John Lawson ran the ball once to advance the Scotties down the field and again into the end zone for Glasgow's fourth touchdown of the game. Though the Scotties were not able to convert for two extra points, the running clock kicked as Glasgow took a 38-0 lead with 6:27 remaining in the third quarter.
Holding on to a seemingly insurmountable lead, Glasgow ushered their second string onto the field for the fourth quarter. The shift did not slow down Glasgow as demonstrated when KJ Ingram snagged an interception and ran the ball down to the 10-yard line. The sophomore's big play set Glasgow up for yet another touchdown, scored by Lawson. Glasgow was unable to convert on the extra two point attempt, but held a 44-0 lead with 4:53 remaining.
"Once we got the running clock in the third quarter, it was the final blow to the Panthers," said Hughes. "The younger guys did well. It's good to see the younger guys play." Johnson echoed his fellow captain, "In games like those, it is crucial to get our young guys playing time to boost their confidence. They finished out the game well and we were able to get the win."
Roundup did find their own end zone and connected with the kick for the point after touchdown for a final score of 44-7.
The Panthers struggled at time to find their footing in the game, committing a number of turnovers. Barnett said Roundup is also fielding an inexperienced team this season. "They had a whole bunch of younger guys playing."
"Defense played really well," said assistant coach Sam Tedrow. "We gave up one long pass ... I think we held them to 30 yards."
Donaldson amassed 49 passing yards, connecting on 5 of 9 passes, including two touchdowns and two interceptions. The quarterback also had six carries for 83 rushing yards.
Kyler Hallock led the Scotties in rushing yards, racking up 86 yards on 14 carries. He averaged 6.14 yards per carry. Tatum Hansen carried the ball nine times for 61 yards, including a 39-yard run. The sophomore averaged 6.77 yards a carry. Lawson had five carries for a total of 48 yards.
Fast had two catches, one for an eight-yard gain and a second for 15 yards. Nik Burke had a 10-yard catch. Johnson had two catches for 11-yard and five-yard gains.
The Scotties combined for 36 rushes and 283 yards offensively, averaging 7.86 yards per carry. They had 49 total yards passing for 332 total offensive yards.
The win moves Glasgow's record to 1-0 on the season, both non-conference games. Quarterback and co-captain Donaldson said, "The team worked hard last week at practice and it showed on Saturday night." Johnson said, "It was definitely a win we needed to get us ready for Baker this upcoming week."
Fast said Scottie fans "should look for a fun and exciting team to watch this season."
Glasgow will be back on home turf this weekend against the Baker Spartans. "They're pretty quick," Barnett said. "I'm guessing it will be a battle of speed."
Tedrow added, "They throw a bunch of different formations ... it'll be good for our defense to see something different."
The Scotties host Baker this Friday, Sept. 10, for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Scottie Field.
