Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
Glasgow's volleyball team, after a golden start at the Choteau Invitational, stumbled this past weekend. They lost to Plentywood at home on Friday then traveled to Chinook where they finished in second place.
Coach Somer Hoerster knew the matchup against the Wildcats would be a tough one for her Scotties but her team took the visitors to all five games in the match. After five, Plentywood came out on top, 25-19, 23-25, 25-12, 17-25, 15-0.
The Wildcats led in a all stats categories over the course of the match. The visitors had 46 kills to Glasgow's 34, while racking up six blocks, nine aces, 90 digs and 38 assists. Glasgow had two blocks, five aces, 55 digs and 27 assists.
Abrianna Nielsen led Glasgow in kills with 11 total. Carly Nelson was credited with both of Glasgow's blocks in the match and Klaire Krumeide led in aces with two. Blaire Westby racked up 25 digs to lead the Scotties. Daley Aune led the way in assists with 14.
On Saturday the team traveled to Chinook for the Chinook Invitational. The Scotties went 1-2 in pool play before entering the single elimination bracket. Glasgow fell to Chinook 25-23, 11-10 before defeating Cut Bank 25-17, 18-10. They then fell to Roy-Winifred 25-23, 12-10.
Glasgow faced Roy-Winifred in the first round of the bracket and won 25-11, 25-17. The win set them up to face Shelby who defeated Chinook in the bracket to advance. Hoerster said, "We split with [Roy-Winifred] and beat them when it mattered."
Shelby defeated Glasgow in two close sets 25-23, 25-21, placing the Scotties second out of eight teams at the tournament. "...we just didn't play well and that was frustrating," said the Scotties' head coach.
Hoerster did not mince words on her team's performance in Chinook, "I was pretty disappointed in our efforts yesterday. We did not play consistent or very well." She noted her offense struggled with serving and passing at the invitational.
Serving, passing and setting will be the focus of Glasgow's practices this week as they gear up to face Malta this week. Coach Hoerster said her girls will be doing their homework, watching film of the M-ettes before they set foot on the court to work on their offense.
Though Hoerster's focus will be on the physical aspects of the game, she noted that is not all her team needs to work on. "I know they're capable," she said, "but they need to toughen up mentally if we're going to get where we want to be."
The Scotties travel to Malta this Thursday, Sept. 9 to take on the M-ettes. Games will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, the team hosts the Harlem Wildcats with games beginning at 1 p.m.
