Remember When

Our weather has definitely been one for the record books.

So many times on the news we hear of another city, town, or community suggesting water restrictions.

Some of us well remember saving water, but it was not due to any mandate from high up officials.

Do you remember bathing when more than one child or person used the same bath water?

Your hair was shampooed no more than once a week. How about doing dishes, by hand of course.

The rinse water was never run down the drain (of course not many had a drain anyway.)

This water was saved to maybe mop the floor, rinse some soiled clothes, but most always used during the growing season to water a tree or a plant you hoped would survive.

Many people hauled all of their household water.

Whether you hauled it by bucket from the well, or happened to have a cistern to haul it to, it was not wasted.

You did not turn your faucet on and let it run while you looked through your fridge, or cupboard.

If you were lucky enough to have indoor plumbing, you did not flush the commode every use either.

There were people that had a truck with a large tank on the back that made a living delivering water to outlaying communities and other rural areas.

These are just a few of my memories - and I pray that we do not have to see that again.

But if you do have occasion to be around someone that is frugal with their water, just remember there may be a reason.
