Aune and Hansen Earn Honors
The Glasgow Reds hosted the Billings Cardinals on Tuesday, splitting an exciting doubleheader, before heading to North Dakota for the Williston Tournament, where the team claimed second place.
Glasgow took game one over Billings by five runs, 12-7, after strong performances in the second and fourth innings despite being outhit, 11-10. Game two went to the Cardinals by a score of 9-8 after being outhit 12-8.
In Williston, the Reds won three games and dropped two on their way to a second-place finish. Rance Rhoads led Glasgow to their first win, 11-0, over Mandan. They then dropped a game to Bismarck, 2-1, in a pitching battle. Glasgow stormed back against Williston Orange, winning 8-3, before blowing out Williston Black, 12-2. That win pitted the Reds against Bismarck in the title game. A seventh-inning rally by the North Dakota team gave them the victory, 4-3, over Glasgow.
On Tuesday in Glasgow, the Cardinals took an early lead in the game, scoring two runs in the first and three in the second before the home team lit up the scoreboard. Glasgow put up four runs in the bottom of the second to bring them within a run of the visitors.
Rhoads batted in Jack Sprague and Calvin Bengochea on a single ground ball to start the Reds' scoring, before crossing home plate himself on a wild pitch with Tel Aune at bat. Walker Laumeyer closed out the inning's scoring on a passed ball with Tatum Hansen at the plate.
Both teams sent a runner home in the third inning, allowing Billings to maintain their one-run lead. Sprague scored again for Glasgow, crossing home on a Bengochea double fly ball. The Reds kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard in the top of the fourth before exploding with six runs to take the lead.
Riley Smith was first to cross the plate in the Reds' big inning, scoring on a passed ball with Jeramiah Benson at the plate. Benson then doubled with a fly ball to left field, sending Hansen and Juliun Benson home. Jeramiah Benson scored on a Sprague line drive, before Sprague scored on a Bengochea fly ball. Rhoads notched another RBI when he sent Bengochea home with a double line drive.
The Cardinals sent a runner home in the top of the fifth to bring them one run closer to the Reds, but Glasgow added a final run of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Mark Eliason singled with a ground ball and sent Sprague home for Glasgow. Billings went three-up, three-down in the top of the seventh with a pop out to Hansen and two ground outs courtesy of first baseman Rhoads.
Rhoads led Glasgow with three RBIs in the game, followed by Jeramiah Benson with two. Sprague, Bengochea and Eliason added one each. Bengochea went 2-for-3 at bat for the Reds. Juliun Benson, Hansen and Sprague all had a stolen base for the home team.
Mason Hunter earned the win for the Reds on the mound, allowing seven runs on nine hits while throwing a 64.1 strike percentage. Jordan Plummer earned the save for Glasgow, allowing no runs on two hits, pitching two and one-third innings in relief.
In game two, Glasgow took the lead when Aune scored on an error by the Cardinals' center fielder in the bottom of the first, putting the Reds up 1-0, a lead that held until the Cardinals sent five runners home in the top of the third. Hansen scored in the bottom of the third on a Juliun Benson double to cut into the Cardinals' lead.
Glasgow ended Billings time at the plate in fourth with a double play when third baseman Aune got the ball to catcher Plummer for out one followed by a Plummer throw to first baseman Rhoads for the second out. Billings shut out Glasgow in the same inning, before adding two more runs to their score in the top of the fifth.
The Reds answered with six run sin the bottom of the inning to take the lead back. Plummer took advantage of a Cardinals' error to score first. Smith and Aune scored on a Hansen double fly ball to center field. Hansen scored on a Juliun Benson single line drive to left field. Juliun Benson crossed the plate on a passed ball with Kolstad at bat. Kolstad grounded out, but sent Bengocha home for the Reds' eighth and final run of the game.
Billings responded with two run sin the sixth inning, to regain their lead for the final time. The remainder of the game produced no scores for either team.
Juliun Benson took the loss for Glasgow, pitching four and two-thirds innings. He allowed seven runs on 10 hits while throwing a 58.4 strike percentage. Kolstad pitched one-third of an inning, allowing no runs on e one hit. Sprague finished the game for the Reds on the mound, allowing two runs on one hit.
Aune and Hansen both had two hits for Glasgow in the game. Hansen and Juliun Benson each had two RBIs for the home team. Aune, Hansen and Juliun Benson each notched a stolen base.
The team traveled to North Dakota for the three-day Williston Tournament. Glasgow took their first game on Friday in decisive fashion powered by a no-hitter from Rhoads on the mound. The righty threw all five innings for the Reds against Mandan. He struck out 10, including three in a row in the top of the second, while throwing a 62.8 strike percentage.
Offensively, the Reds had the run of the field, sending 11 runners home over four innings on seven hits. They started the game with five runs, when Glasgow went all the way through their lineup, added three in the second and three in the fourth.
Aune and Hansen both scored on a passed ball with Bengochea at bat in the first. Bengochea crossed the plate on an error by Mandan's third baseman. Jeramiah Benson scored on a Kolstad ground ball and Sprague took advantage of an error by Mandan's first baseman to score.
Bengochea batted in Aune in the second, before scoring himself on a Jeramiah Benson single line drive. Jeramiah Benson scored on an error by Mandan's catcher with Rhoads at bat. The Reds' defense notched a double play in the top of the fourth when Jeramiah Benson, Riley Smith and Juliun Benson combined forced for outs at second and first.
Aune crossed the plate again the bottom of the fourth after nailing a triple fly ball. Jeramiah Benson batted in Juliun Benson before scoring himself on an Eliason single line drive. Glasgow ended Mandan's hopes for good in the top of the fifth with a strikeout, ground out and another strikeout.
Jeramiah Benson went 3-for-3 at bat while notching two RBIs for Glasgow. Aune went 2-for-2 at the plate. Hansen, Bengochea, Eliason and Kolstad added RBIs. Aune, Bengochea, Jeramiah Benson, Hansen and Sprague each had a stolen base.
The Reds' first loss of the tournament came at the hands of Bismarck in a defensive battle, also on Friday. Juliun Benson was the only Glasgow runner to touch home plate, scoring in the top of the fifth on a Jeramiah Benson single to left field. Unfortunately for Glasgow, Bismarck managed to score twice in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Glasgow outhit Bismarck in the matchup, 4-3, led by Jeramiah Benson, who went 2-for-3 at bat with the only Reds' RBI. Juliun Benson and Bengochea added one hit each.
Sprague took the loss for Glasgow on the mound. He pitched three innings, allowing no runs on one hit while throwing a 60.6 strike percentage and striking out six. Plummer allowed no runs or hits in two innings while throwing a 66.7 strike percentage. Smith allowed two runs on two hits in one and one-third innings.
The Reds were back on the field Saturday afternoon to take on the Williston Orange. Glasgow scored eight runs on eight hits in their 8-3 win. Aune singled on a line drive in the bottom of the second to send Kolstad home to start the Reds' scoring. Bengochea scored in the third with Kolstad at the plate and Jeramiah Benson was next across the plate, scoring on a Plummer pop fly to left field.
Williston scored a single run in the top of the fourth, but Glasgow answered with five more runs. Hunter scored on a Juliun Benson sacrifice fly and Aune crossed home on a Bengochea fly ball to left field. Hansen scored on an error and Bengochea scored on a passed ball, both with Jeramiah Benson at the plate. Kolstad nailed a single ground ball to send Sprague home for the Reds' fifth run of the inning.
The Orange put up two more runs in the top of the sixth but it was not enough to negate Glasgow's lead.
Eliason earned the win for Glasgow, going six innings and throwing a 60.4 strike percentage. He allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out three. Aune pitched one inning in relief, allowing no runs on one hit while throwing a 75.0 strike percentage.
Bengochea went 2-for-4 at the plate and notched one RBI. Aune, Juliun Benson, Kolsatd and Plummer added one RBI each. Aune, Hansen and Hunter had two stole bases a piece while Bengochea, Jeramiah Benson and Kolstad added one each.
That evening, the Reds earned their third win of the tournament in a blow out over the Williston Black. Glasgow outhit Williston by a 7-6 margin, but found more success in converting hits to runs as they ran away to a 12-2 win in five innings.
Williston lit up the scoreboard first, putting up a run in the bottom of the first. Glasgow responded with six runs in the top of the second. Jeramiah Benson was first over the plate, scoring on a Sprague single line drive to left field. Sprague and Smith scored when Glasgow returned to the top of the lineup and Aune singled on a pop fly. Juliun Benson singled on a ground ball and sent Eliason and Hansen home. Juliun Benson would score on the next batter when Bengochea singled on a line drive to left field.
Williston put up a run in the bottom of the third, but again Glasgow answered strongly, sending four more runners home in the top of the fourth. Jeramiah Benson batted in Hansen and Juliun Benson on a pop fly. Begochea crossed the plate on a Sprague ground ball and Sprague completed his trip around the bases on a Laumeyer ground out.
The Reds' fielding notched yet another double play when Bengochea snatched a line drive in left field then passed to Smith at second base for the second of two outs in their shutout inning. Hansen scored on a Bengochea sacrifice fly and Juliun Benson scored on a wild pitch with Jeramiah Benson at bat in the top of the fifth to extend Glasgow's lead to 10.
Glasgow shut out Williston in the bottom of the inning – three-up, three-down – to secure the victory. Aidin Price earned the win for the Reds, going all six innings and allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out three while throwing a 58.6 strike percentage.
Juliun Benson went 3-for-3 at bat and notched two RBIs for Glasgow. Bengochea and Aune added two more Reds' RBIs each while going 1-for-2 at the plate. Juliun Benson also led in stolen bases with two. Hansen, Laumeyer, Smith and Sprague added one stolen base each.
The win set up Glasgow for an appearance in the championship game where they fell to Bismarck in a low-scoring affair, 4-3.
Bismarck took the lead after scoring a run in the first and second innings. Glasgow lit up the scoreboard for the first time in the top of the third, when Aune crossed the plate on a Juliun Benson line drive to right field.
Glasgow's fielding notched their third double play of the tournament when second baseman Sprague got the ball to shortstop Juliun Benson, who then sent it to Rhoads at first base. Back at bat, the Reds put up two more runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Smith scored on a Juliun Benson line drive and Aune scored on a Bengochea sacrifice fly. Neither team mustered a run again until Bismarck rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs to win the game.
Smith took the loss for Glasgow on the mound, pitching two-thirds of an inning in relief. He allowed two runs on four hits while throwing a 50.0 strike percentage. Hunter started the game on the mound and lasted six innings. He threw a 54.4 strike percentage and allowed two run son five hits while striking out three.
Juliun Benson went 2-for-3 at bat while notching two RBIs. Aune connected for Glasgow's other hit in the game and Bengochea had the Reds' third RBI. Aune led Glasgow with two stolen bases and Jeramiah Benson had one.
Hansen was named Offensive Player of the tournament and Tel Aune was honored as Overall Tournament MVP.
The Reds were in Froid on Tuesday, July 13, for a doubleheader but scores were not available at press time. They return to their home field on Thursday, July 15, hosting the Miles City Mavericks for a pair with games at 3 and 5 p.m. Glasgow closes out their regular season at home on Saturday, July 17, with a doubleheader against the Laurel Dodgers. Game times will be 1 and 3 p.m.
