Glasgow Reds Hit Rough Patch

The Glasgow Reds baseball team hit a bit of a rough patch this past week, going 1-3 over two doubleheaders. They dropped both games in Miles City to the Mavericks last Tuesday before taking game one against the Billings Blue Jays at home on Thursday. The team was in Billings on Monday and Tuesday for doubleheaders against the Blue Jays and Cardinals, but scores were not available at press time.

In game one on June 22 against the Mavericks, the Reds held even with the hosts on hits, but were unable to convert into runs, losing 14-8. Miles City took their game-winning lead in the bottom of the third while holding Glasgow scoreless in two of the four remaining innings.

Tel Aune put the Reds on the scoreboard first, rounding home on a Juliun Benson sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the first. Tatum Hansen scored on a passed ball with Jeramiah Benson at bat. The inning was over for the Reds two batters later and Miles City stepped to the plate. The home team put up five runs.

Glasgow put up two more runs in the second and one in the third to tie the game. Jack Kolstad scored when Hansen hit a ground ball and reached first on an error by the Mavericks' shortstop. Hansen himself scored on a Juliun Benson double line drive to center field. In the top of the third Calvin Bengochea scored when Mason Hunter reached first on an error by the Mavericks' first baseman.

Miles City added three runs in the bottom of the third, to take the lead. Glasgow put up two runs in the fourth before the Mavericks added three more, cementing their lead. Aune scored on a Rance Rhoads ground ball and Hansen scored on a Jeramiah Benson single ground ball to shortstop.

Glasgow was shut out in the fifth while Miles City added yet another three runs. Glasgow's final run of the game came from Aune who crossed the plate on an error by the Mavericks' first baseman. The game ended when Glasgow was again shut out in the seventh.

Glasgow registered 12 hits in the game, led by Aune who went 3-for-4 at bat. Hansen and Jeramiah Benson added two hits each. Juliun Benson had two RBIs for the Reds while Jeramiah Benson added Glasgow's third. Bengochea and Jeramiah Benson each had a stolen base.

Juliun Benson took the loss for the Reds on the mound. He went for three innings, allowing eight runs on six hits while throwing a 53.4 strike percentage. Kolstad relieved him for one inning, allowing three runs on one hit and throwing a 35.7 strike percentage. Jeramiah Benson also spent an inning on the mound. He allowed three runs on three hits and threw a 47.8 strike percentage. Aiden Price allowed no runs on two hits and threw a 66.7 strike percentage in one inning for Glasgow.

In game two, the Reds were downed by a late-game rally by the Mavericks, 12-7. Glasgow held a one-run lead gong into the fifth inning but were felled when Miles City scored two in the fifth to take the lead. Miles City secured their win in the sixth with four more runs.

Aune again started the action for Glasgow, scoring in the first on a Juliun Benson ground out to shortstop. Miles City answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Glasgow gave a measured response with two runs in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth inning, all while denying the Mavericks a trip around the bases.

Jeramiah Benson scored in the second on a Kolstad groundout and JT Sprague touched the plate on a passed ball with Hansen at bat. Juliun Benson put up Glasgow's tying run in the third inning, scoring when the Mavericks walked Jordan Plummer. Glasgow ended the Mavericks' time at bat with a double play. Reds left fielder Jeramiah Benson passed the ball to Aune at home for an out there before he passed to Plummer at third for the third out of the inning.

Aune scored the first of Glasgow's three fourth-inning runs, rounding home on a Hansen ground ball. Hansen would stole home with Sprague at bat and Juliun Benson scored on when Sprague singled a line drive to center field. Miles City kept Glasgow from scoring over the remaining three innings.

Juliun Benson went 2-for-2 at bat while added an RBI for Glasgow. Hansen, Sprague, Plummer and Kolstad added one RBI each. Juliun Benson also led the team in stolen bases with two. Aune, Jeramiah Benson, Hansen and Sprague had one stolen base a piece.

Mason Hunter took the loss for Glasgow on the mound. He went four innings and allowed two runs on five hits while throwing a 58.1 strike percentage. Rhoads and Plummer pitched an inning each for Glasgow. Rhoads allowed six runs on five hits while throwing a 54.1 strike percentage and Plummer allowed four runs on four hits while throwing a 44.8 strike percentage.

Glasgow earned their lone victory of the week at home in game one of a doubleheader against the Billings Blue Jays. The win came after an exciting game in which Sprague put on a pitching clinic and the Reds came from behind in the final innings to win.

The pitching show started early in the game as only five Blue Jays and four Reds stepped up to the plate in the first inning. Both teams went three-up, three-down in the second and third innings. Sprague shut down Billings in the fourth, facing only four batters. Glasgow again went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the inning.

Billings managed to send one runner home in the top of the fifth before denying Glasgow in the bottom of the inning. The Blue Jays added a second run in the top of the sixth before Glasgow stepped up to the plate and scored three runs. Aune rounded home on a Rhoads single pop fly to right field. Sprague hit a double to center field and batted in Rhoads and Juliun Benson to take a one-run lead.

Billings had three pop outs and one home run in the top of the seventh to tie the game, but Glasgow stepped up. Riley Smith singled on a line drive and advanced to second on a Kolstad bunt out. That brought Glasgow to the top of the lineup with Aune. The catcher did not disappoint the fans. He batted Smith home on a single fly ball to left field for the win.

Aune went 3-for-4 at bat and his one RBI came when it mattered most. Jeramiah Benson went 2-for-3 at bat while Hansen, Rhoads, Sprague and Smith added one hit each. Sprague led the Reds with two RBIs while Rhoads and Aune and one each.

Sprague pitched five innings for Glasgow, allowing one run on three hits and throwing a 75.9 strike percentage. Rhoads closed the game for Glasgow and earned the win, allowing two run son three hits while throwing a 58.6 strike percentage.

Game two of the doubleheader went to the Blue Jays by a final score of 21-9 as the visitors outhit the home team by a 22-14 margin. Billings' bats were hot in the final innings of the game as they ran up the score with five runs in the sixth and eight in the seventh.

Billings lit up the scoreboard first, sending a runner home in the top of the second. Glasgow found the plate in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to briefly take the lead. Aune stole home to notch the Reds' first run. Hansen was right behind him, taking advantage of a first baseman error to score with Jeramiah Benson at bat. He sent Juliun Benson home when he connected on a single line drive to left field. Jeramiah Benson scored on a Smith pop fly to center field.

Billings answered with four runs of their own in the top of the fourth before shutting Glasgow out in the bottom. The Blue Jays lit up the scoreboard three times in the fifth. The Reds sent three runners home in response. Sprague scored on a Smith triple fly ball to left field, and Smith completed his trip around the bases on a Kolstad ground out. Aune took advantage of a wild pitch to Rhoads to score Glasgow's seventh run.

The Blue Jays then went on a run, sending 13 runners home in their last two at-bats to take a commanding 21-7 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Glasgow managed to cut into the Billings' lead by two, but it was not enough. Bengochea rounded home on a Juliun Benson ground ball to shortstop and Aune scored on a Rhoads single line drive to center field.

Hansen went 4-for-4 at bat for the Reds and Aune was 3-for-5 at the plate. Smith led the team in RBIs with two, while Juliun Benson, Rhoads, Jeramiah Benson and Kolstad added one a piece. Aune, Jeramiah Benson and Hansen all notched a stolen base for the home team.

Mark Eliason took the loss for Glasgow on the mound. He allowed five runs on seven hits over three innings while throwing a 53.8 strike percentage. Smith pitched two innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits and throwing a 53.9 strike percentage. Aune, Walker Laumeyer and Hansen also spent time on the mound for the Reds. Aune allowed no runs on one hit. Laumeyer allowed five runs on three hits and Hansen allowed three runs on three hits.

The Reds travel to Wolf Point on Thursday, July 1, for a doubleheader against the YellowJackets. Game times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. On Tuesday, July 6 they will host the Billings Cardinals for a pair of games at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Sullivan Park.
