The Glasgow Reds hit the road last week for games in Glendive and Havre. In six games the Reds went 3-3. Glasgow's record now sits at 3-5 on the season.
Glasgow's first win came in game one of a double header against the Glendive Blue Devils on Wednesday. The Reds took an early lead in the top of the first and never looked back in an 8-0 victory. Glendive answered back in game two, scoring one more run than Glasgow to take a the 5-4 win.
Tel Aune was first on base for the Reds, taking the walk. He crossed the plate after a wild pitch to Calvin Bengochea. Bengochea went down swinging to end the top of the first. Glasgow set up their defensive dominance early. Juliun Benson struck out the first batter and the next two batters hit fly outs to Jeramiah Benson in center field. The Blue Devils shut out Glasgow in the top of the second, before the Reds returned the favor in the bottom of the inning.
Julian Benson scored for Glasgow in the top of the third, and Tatum Hansen took advantage of an error by Blue Devils pitcher D. Reynolds in the top of the fourth to score the Reds' third run of the game. The scoreboard showed goose eggs for both teams until Glasgow lit it up in the top of the sixth with four runs. A Glendive pitching change led to hot bats for the Reds. Juliun Benson again crossed the plate for Glasgow, followed a few batters later by Kristian Price. Tel Aune closed out the inning with a single line drive, sending Bengochea and JT Sprague home.
Hansen notched the final run of the game, scoring early in the top of the seventh on a Juliun Benson double line drive to right field. The Glasgow defense continued their shut out and the game ended on a fly out to Hansen in right field.
Juliun Benson lasted all seven innings for Glasgow, allowing zero runs on 11 hits. He threw a 74.7 strike percentage. He and Hansen led the team in hits with three each, followed by Price with two. Aune and Jordan Plummer each had two RBIs, while Juliun Benson and Sprague added one each.
Back on the field for game two, the Blue Devils took the early lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the first with Mason Donaldson on the mound. The host team added a second run in the third while keeping Glasgow off the scoreboard until the top of the fifth. Juliun Benson crossed home first for Glasgow, scoring on a Hansen double line drive to center field. Jeramiah Benson scored on a wild pitch to Price for the Reds' tying run.
Glendive took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth before Glasgow tied in the top of the sixth when Sprague scored on a wild pitch to Hansen. Glendive went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the inning on a strikeout and two ground outs. Juliun Benson scored in the top of the seventh as Glasgow briefly held the lead. Glendive added two runs in the bottom of the seventh with Riley Smith on the mound.
Smith took the loss for the Reds, allowing two runs on one hit in the seventh. Donaldson threw a 66.2 strike percentage of the first six innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Hansen led the team in hits with two and one RBI. Aune, Juliun Benson and Price added one hits each.
On Friday, the Reds traveled to Havre to take on the Billings Expos and the Gallatin Valley Outlaws. Glasgow notched an impressive 18-0 drubbing of Billings, powered by Aune at bat and Sprague and Price on the mound. The team then fell to the Gallatin Valley, 11-4, after a late game rally by the Outlaws.
Aune scored the first run for Glasgow in 9-run route to start the game. He doubled on a pop fly to start the game and crossed home plate when Bengochea was hit by a pitch. Hansen was next to score, advancing when Plummer was walked.
Jack Kolstad batted in Price and Bengochea on a ground ball double. Billings' Owen Olliges continued to struggle on the mound, walking several batters and advancing Plummer, Kolstad and Walker Laumeyer home. Jeramiah Benson scored on error by the Expos catcher and Aune scored on a wild pitch to Juliun Benson.
Glasgow shut out the Expos' offense, including a three-up, three-down strikeout streak in the bottom of the second by Sprague. Glasgow continued to light up the scoreboard in the top of the third, sending four runners home.
Jeramiah Benson doubled on a fly ball to left field and then scored on an Aune single ground ball. Aune took advantage of an error by catcher Evan Johnson to score, after advancing to third on a wild pitch. Bengochea then sent Hansen and Price home on a triple fly ball to center field.
The top of the fourth saw four more runners make a trip around the bases for Glasgow. Gage Siefert, in for Laumeyer, scored on an Aune double ground ball to center field. Hansen then sent Jeramiah Benson and Aune home on a double fly ball to left field. Donaldson batted Hansen in on a single to left field.
Glasgow sent Billings packing in the bottom of the inning, notching a ground and two strikeouts to quickly dash the Expos' scoring hopes. The Reds' final run of the game came in the top of the fifth when Aune crossed home on a Donaldson single ground ball to shortstop. Glasgow ended the game early after another shutout inning with Price on the mound.
Sprague earned the win for Glasgow, allowing only one hit in four innings while throwing a 62.9 strike percentage and notching eight strikeouts. Price allowed one hit while throwing a 46.7 strike percentage.
Aune went 4-for-4 at the plate. He scored five times and had three RBIs. Hansen went 3-for-3 at bat and batted in three runners. Bengochea also had three RBIs, going 2-for-3 at bat. Donaldson went 2-for-2 at bat and registered two RBIs. Kolstad added two more RBIs for the Reds.
The Reds then hit the field against an offensively strong Gallatin Valley Outlaws team. The Outlaws took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Glasgow answered back in the top of the third and fourth, putting up a run in each to tie the game. Aune scored first for the Reds, crossing home on a Price single line drive to center field. Rance Rhoads scored on a Hansen ground ball in the fourth.
Gallatin Valley then took control of the game, putting up four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth for a commanding 11-2 lead heading into the final inning. Glasgow had a small rally in the top of the seventh, scoring two more runs, but could not muster enough offense to pull even with the Outlaws. Hansen scored on his third stolen base of the game and Kolstad crossed the plate on a Laumeyer ground hit.
The Reds tried four pitchers in the game, but it was Rhoads who took the loss for Glasgow. He pitched one inning, the fifth, and allowed our runs on three hits. He had one strikeout with a 72 strike percentage. Plummer started the game for Glasgow and lasted four innings. He allowed two runs on five hits. Bengochea pitched the majority of the sixth inning, before Price relieved him for one batter. Bengochea allowed five runs on four hits.
Aune, Juliun Benson, Price and Jeramiah Benson each registered a hit for Glasgow. Price had the only RBI of the game for Glasgow. Hansen racked up three stolen bases and Kolstad and Sprague had two a piece.
The Reds were back in Havre on Sunday for another pair of games. Glasgow dropped their first game to the Great Falls Chargers, 6-4, but returned to the field for a win against the Havre North Stars, 9-4.
Glasgow took an early lead against Great Falls, but the Chargers rallied in the fourth and fifth innings to claim the lead and the game. The Reds came out strong, shutting down the Chargers in three batters in the top of the first, before putting up two runs in the bottom of the inning. Aune scored on a third baseman error and Juliun Benson scored on a Smith single to center field.
The Reds doubled their lead in the bottom of the second when Jeramiah Benson stole home with Hansen at bat. Aune scored on a Juliun Benson single line drive to left field. The third inning registered no runs for either team. Then the game belonged to the Chargers. Great Falls put up four runs in the fourth to tie the game and added two in the fifth to take the lead. They shut out the Reds for the win.
Mason Hunter took the loss for Glasgow, allowing six runs on six hits in just under five innings. He struck out four Chargers while throwing a 57 strike percentage. Kolstad relieved him in the fifth and threw for just over an inning, allowing no hits or runs while throwing a 41.4 strike percentage. Aune took the mound in the top of the seventh, allowing no hits or runs, while throwing a 77.8 strike percentage.
Hansen and Smith led the offense with two hits each, while Smith and Juliun Benson each notched an RBI. Aune led the team with two stolen bases. Juliun Benson, Jeramiah Benson and Hansen each added a stolen base for Glasgow.
Glasgow was back on the diamond against Havre, who took an early lead in the game before the Reds rallied for the win. Glasgow scored first, when Aune rounded home on a Rhoads sacrifice fly to right field in the first. Havre answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning with Hansen on the mound. He was relieved by Smith late in the inning.
Neither team made their way around the bases in the second. The Reds scored two in the top of the third to tie the game before Havre regained a one-run lead in the bottom of the inning. Aune rounded home on a Bengochea single to shortstop and Juliun Benson scored on a Smith fly ball to second. Havre's run in the third proved to be their last as Glasgow took over the game.
Rhoads took over pitching duties as a scoreless fourth inning by both teams preceded a scoring route by the Reds. Rhoads rounded home when Sprague hit a ground ball to third base and Bengochea took advantage of a catcher error to cross home plate in the fifth.
Juliun Benson completed his trip around the bases when Rhoads hit a single fly ball in the sixth. Jeramiah Benson scored on a passed ball with Juliun Benson at bat in the seventh. Aune scored for Glasgow on a Juliun Benson sacrifice fly. Hansen rounded out the Reds scoring, crossing the plate on a Rhoads sacrifice fly to left field.
Rhoads earned the win on the mound for Glasgow, pitching shy of four innings, allowing zero runs on three hits. He struck out two North Stars while throwing a 60 strike percentage. Hansen, who started the game for Glasgow, allowed three runs on zero hits. Smith, who relieved Hansen, allowed one hit and one run, while throwing a 50 strike percentage.
Smith went 3-for-4 at bat and registered one RBI. Bengochea was 2-for-3 at the plate and also had one RBI. Rhoads had three RBIs, going 1-for-1 at bat. Juliun Benson led the team with two stolen bases. Aune, Bengochea, Smith, Sprague and mark Eliason had one stolen base a piece.
The Glasgow Reds played host to the Post 49 Bulls on Tuesday, June 8, but results and stats were unavailable at press time.
Reds Head Coach Jack Sprague says his team is doing pretty well so far this season. "Defense and pitching are getting better," he noted, "so a few more times through the rotation and we should have a pretty good idea of how we will be."
Glasgow will continue to work through their rotation this weekend in the Watford City, N.D., tournament Thursday through Sunday, June 10-13. The Reds' first game will be against Makoti, N.D., on Thursday at noon, MDT. The team then faces Watford City on Friday at 6:30 p.m., MDT. They take on Powell, Wyo., on Saturday at 11 a.m., MDT. Their final game in Watford City is on Sunday at 10 a.m., MDT, versus a team yet to be determined.
On Tuesday, June 15, Glasgow will play host to the Havre North Stars. The nine-inning game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
