Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
City Also Needs New Representative for Ward 1
Mayor Becky Erickson will not seek re-election following the end of her term in December. Additionally, Todd Young, Ward 1 Councilmember, has resigned from his position.
Erickson announced her decision during the regular city council meeting on Monday afternoon, citing conflicting familial obligations.
"I have removed my name from the November ballot for the position of mayor," she said. "I strongly believe the next generation of public servants is wiling and very capable to step up and serve in the many different roles needed for city government to be successful. It has been a real honor to have served as Glasgow's Mayor the last eight years and I cannot thank the community enough to have put their trust in me."
Erickson has served the city for nearly the past four decades.
"We have a wonderful community to work with, and it has been fun. I remember when I first came on the council, I was the youngest. Now I am the oldest. I guess when that happens it is time to go.
It was tough decision to make, Erickson said.
Rod Karst has already thrown his hat into the ring for the upcoming mayoral election. He currently serves as councilmember for Ward 3
"We will see if anyone else comes out of the wood work," Erickson said. "We will get that younger generation involved."
Young has served as Councilmember for Ward 1 since January 2020. He felt legally obliged to resign from his post because he has recently sold his home in the ward and has had difficulty purchasing a new one.
"We sold our house and we have been trying to buy a few different houses in my ward," Young said. "It still hasn't worked out yet. We still haven't bought a house yet. We are working on that as we speak. It is in motion. I figured I would give it some time, and hopefully the cards would fall into place. But they didn't, so I figured it was time I need to step away and let somebody in the ward [assume responsibility]. Hopefully we will find a great representative."
Erickson, during the meeting, encouraged community members to apply for Young's position, which would span through the end of 2023.
"It is has been fun," Young said following the meeting. "When I figure out what ward I will be living in, hopefully permanently, I do fully anticipate to run for councilmen again. It has been a great learning experience. I really have enjoyed it. The year and a half I was here, hopefully I made some sort of an impact."
