Hinsdale Girls Bring Home Hardware

McColly Takes Two Firsts, Lustre's Hambira Wins High Jump

Valley County is now home to two individual state champions. Hinsdale's Kaitlyn McColly earned two first-place finishes and Lustre Christian's Jasiah Hambira won one event at the MHSA Class AA-C State Track & Field Meet in Missoula, held May 27-29.

HINSDALE RAIDERS

For the first time in school history, the Hinsdale Raiders girls track and field team brought home hardware from the State C meet. To the surprise of no one, senior standout Kaitlyn McColly scored all 42 points for her team. "Kaitlyn has been a great competitor for our younger girls to train and compete with," said Raider head coach Taylor Olson.

McColly claimed the top spots in the triple jump and 300 meter hurdles. She leapt 35-04.00 in the triple jump, a personal record and four inches farther than second-place finisher, Isabella Pereira of Clark Fork. She ran the 300m hurdles in 46.34, defeating Charlo's Carlee Fryberger by 0.29 seconds. Fryberger claimed the top spot in the 100m hurdles, beating McColly by 0.20 seconds. McColly's second-place finish, in a time of 15.01, was a personal record. The third-place finisher, Plentywood's Annie Kaul, ran the race in 16.52 seconds.

She also claimed a second-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 10-06.00. Fairview's Teigan Taylor was the first-pace finisher, after also clearing 10-06.00. McColly set a personal record of 16-11.75 in the long jump and finished in third place, behind Abby Clark, 17-03.50, and Aspen Giese, 17-00.50, both of Fort Benton. McColly's teammate, freshman Zora Holt finished 16th in the 3200 meter run with a time of 14:02.84.

The Raiders' boys team earned 15.5 points at the State Meet in Missoula for a 13th place finish. Senior Loden Idler made three appearances on the podium and teammate Jesse Lee had three top-six placings. Idler placed fourth in the 100 meter run, running the finals event in 11.66 seconds. He also claimed second in the 200m with a time of 23.57, improving upon his preliminary time by 0.03 seconds to move up two spots in the finals. Idler tied with two other athletes for third place in the pole vault, clearing 11-06. Idler took 20th in the long jump, leaping 18-02.00.

Lee earned a fifth place finish in the 400m dash, running the race in 52.41. He tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing 5-10.00. His other trip to the podium came from his sixth-place finish in the shot put, which he threw 44-05.50. Lee also competed in the 100m dash where his time in the preliminary was 11.71 and the 200m dash, where he set a personal record of 23.68 in the preliminary and finished in 9th place with a time of 23.99 in the finals.

"Our boys are examples of what every coach preaches: stick with it, work hard and nothing worth having comes easy," said Olson. "Jesse and Loden worked hard for four years and it finally paid off! Neither one had ever won an event at Districts before this year, so each of them placing in three events at state is motivation for all athletes to keep working hard, even if success does not come early."

Trey Johnson, who represented the Raiders team in the boys' hurdles events, finished in 10th in the 110m hurdles and 18th in the 300m hurdles. Johnson earned a trip to the 110m hurdles finals after finishing the preliminary round in 17.48 and 10th place. He kept the 10th slot, but improved his time to 17.14 in the final round. He set a personal record of 45.06 in the 300m hurdles.

Olson, who is looking forward to next year and returning Johnson and Holt as all-conference and state competitors, said, "Anytime we get to see our athletes be competitive and successful, it is going to be fun. I am proud of our kids who all had a great weekend."

LUSTRE CHRISTIAN

Jasiah Hambira, a sophomore at Lustre Christian, earned 10 points after finishing first in the boys' high jump. He cleared 6-03.00, a personal record, and one inch higher than second-place finisher, Toby Niederegger of Chinook. He just missed making the podium in the 400m, after setting a personal record of 53.28, which put him in seventh place. Hambira also competed in the long jump, where he placed 11th with a distance of 19-01.00.

Lustre senior Tiara Whitmus, who represented the girls' Lions team at state, also just missed the podium, finishing seventh in the discus with a throw of 104-11. Coach Lynn Unrau expressed pride in her Lions at state and added, "We're losing a couple seniors, but have a strong group returning next year."

OPHEIM (Scobey-Opheim unified team)

Opheim's Carrie Taylor, competing in a Scobey Spartans uniform, made a podium appearance for her performance in the girls' javelin. The sophomore hit a personal record and took sixth place with a throw of 109-09.

Cole Taylor ran the 1600m and 3200m, as well as a leg of the 4x400 relay, for the Spartan boys team. He finished in 14th place in both of his personal races, setting a personal record of 5:02.14 in the 1600m and finishing the 3200m in 11:15.29. The Scobey relay team placed 12th with a time of 3:45.78. Teammate Bo Anderson represented the Spartans in the triple jump. The sophomore finished in 20th place with a distance of 38-02.00.
