Boys Fourth at State, Girls Place Ninth
The Scottie golf teams finished up their successful 2021 season at Eagle Rock in Billings at the State B Tournament last Tuesday and Wednesday. After two long days of 36 holes, the Glasgow boys finished in fifth place with a team score of 723. The girls team finished in ninth place, scoring 934 over the two days.
The boys finished behind Columbus, Missoula Loyola, Conrad and Baker. Columbus won the girls' competition, followed by Big Timber, Shelby, Shepherd, Colstrip, Three Forks, Townsend, and Manhattan ahead of Glasgow.
Assistant coach Joel Smith talked up his teams' mental fortitude, "Conditions were tough on day two with pretty strong winds yet many of our golfers shot better." All five of the Scottie girls improved their scores, knocking a "whopping 48" strokes off their scorecards. The boys team improved by seven strokes on day two.
The girls improvement was enough to move them to a ninth place finish out of 36 Class B Schools who were at the tournament. Bailee Baxter led her team with a total score of 221, going from 117 on day one to 104 on day two. Shanice Lagerquist turned in scores of 118 and 112, for a total stroke count of 230.
Kylie Lagerquist scored 240, with a 132 on day one and dropping to 108 on day two. Allie Palm scored 124 and 119 for a tournament total of 243. Elle Stone had a 350 after shooting a 183 and a 167.
The Scottie boys' fifth place finish tops what Activities Director Brenner Flaten called "one of the finest seasons in school history." Riley Smith led his team, shooting an 85 and an 82 for a total score of 167 and a seventh place finish. The sophomore's placing is the second highest in GHS history for a Scottie boys golfer. Dale Squires' fifth place finish in 1979 at the Class A tournament is the only one to best Smith. Smith is also the first Scottie to earn All-State honors since Kevin Hill in 2010.
Keigan Ingram shot a 96 on day one, then turned around and shot one of the best games of his young career – an 81 – for a two-day score of 177. Eli Feezell shot a 90 and a 96 for a total score of 186. Rance Rhoads and Vinny Chappell both had a 199 over the two day tournament. Rhoads shot a 94 and and a 105 while Chappell shot a 100 and then dropped to a 99 on Wednesday.
"Watching Riley take seventh was a great way to end the year, first top 10 golfer since 2005," said head coach Todd Truscott, who completed his first active year of coaching after the coronavirus pandemic ended all 2020 spring sports. On social media, the coaches thanked Sunnyside, Hi-Tech Golf, parents and fans for all their dedication in helping the Scottie teams achieve success.
Truscott intends to keep working with his young team to improve and focus on bringing home some hardware from the 2022 state tournament. "My biggest takeaway is how bright the future is for our golf program," he enthused. "The future is bright for Scottie golf!"
