Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
The Glasgow Scottie Track and Field team made the trip to Glendive on Saturday for the annual Wibaux Invitational track Meet. Of 21 teams who earned points for the girls side, Glasgow placed fourth, earning 50 points. The boys earned 42 points, to place fifth out of 15 teams on the scoreboard.
"Obviously, Iris' [McKean] 3200m time was the performance of the day! That was a huge P.R. For her, qualified her for state, and put her seventh on the all-time Scottie list," said head coach Tim Phillips, who was full of praise for his Scottie teams. He added that Emily See was on track to qualify for state, but lost her pace midway through the race. Phillips said he thinks she will qualify at the Sidney meet, April 24.
In the field events, Phillips was pleased with Raelee Dowden who he said improved in shot, disc and long jump. He noted Ava Lloyd set three new personal records at the meet and that Tyann Graham found her groove in the shot put, hitting marks over 30 feet. Samantha Tryan showed improvement in her sprints and improved on her javelin throw.
"Overall, I thought the girls did well. Honestly, we scored more points than I thought we would, but we are very young, so I know there is a lot of room to improve. We are continuing to be patient, trying to look at the end of the season," Phillips told the Courier, "We'll keep amping up the training a bit, but I don't want this to be just a grind, either. With our lower numbers this year, we just don't have any depth. So we want to be extra careful this spring!"
For the boys, Phillips praised his pole vaulters, who have not had much time in action. Colter Cumber improved his leap by a foot and a half in Glendive. He also praised his javelin throwers, Tatum Hansen, Mason Donaldson, Dalton Sand and Zavier Urban, who "continue to impress me." Phillips noted that Sand improved in both running, 800m, and throwing, shot, events this past weekend. Donaldson had a great 200m run, and then filled in a spot on the 4x400m relay. The Scottie coach said, "He wasn't exactly thrilled but we know he's a competitor, and he proved that down the home stretch.
"There were lots of other really good efforts, and we had a nice day to compete – so no complaints!" exclaimed Phillips. "We still have lots of technical things to work on both on the track and in the field, But I saw them coming together as a team a bit, and even helping some other athletes, doing things like holding their blocks for them." Looking forward, he will be experimenting a bit with events to figure out which athletes will excel in which events.
Within the district, the Scottie coach expects competition from neighboring teams, Malta and Wolf Point. "From what I've seen so far, Coach Page has got a lot of quality in Wolf Point," he said. "And we know that Malta, under Coach Kaitlyn Smith, will bring a lot of heat from the throws." He noted further that Harlem and Poplar also field some "real quality athletes." As coach, Phillips is looking for a highly competitive post season.
The Scottie track teams will attend the Baker Invitational this Saturday, April 17.
