The Glasgow Ice Dawgs bantam team traveled to Miles City this past weekend to take their shot at the state champion title. Though the team fell to the eventual champions, they brought home the third-place trophy in a 4-1 victory over the Missoula Bruins.
Glasgow started the tournament Friday morning against Whitefish. The Dawgs rallied after going down 2-0 at the end of the first, but were unable to overcome the deficit and dropped the game, 7-5. Captain Connor Koski put his team on the board 2:36 into the second period. Whitefish put two more pucks behind Dawgs' netminder Kolten Hansen before Aiden Price scored for Glasgow. Their second goal of the game with help from Tavin Boland and Bode Barnett on a power play. Whitefish added one more goal to take a 5-2 lead into intermission.
Whitefish increased their lead to 6-2 just 1:22 into the third period, but goals by Body Hansen and Tavin Boland moments later brought the Dawgs within striking distance. Whitefish added their seventh and final goal of the game midway through the period. B. Hansen, on an assist from Barnett, brought Glasgow back within two goals but the 7-5 score held for the 3:52 remaining on the clock.
K. Hansen turned away 32 of 39 attempts on his home while the Dawgs fired 24 shots on the Whitefish goalie. Whitefish incurred 20 minutes on six penalties while Glasgow had eight minutes on four penalties. Barnett, hooking, and Koski, tripping, served time in the first period. Barnett was back in the box in the second period, again for hooking, and Tristan Powell served time for roughing.
Glasgow returned to the ice Saturday morning to face the Copper City Kings, beating the Butte team 5-1. The Dawgs outshot the Kings 52 to 28 in the contest. K. Hansen registered a 96.4 save percentage, turning away 27 of attempts from between the pipes.
B. Hansen netted the first goal for Glasgow in the first period. He assisted on Barnett's goal 2:06 into the second period. Tavin Boland, assist JP Cornwell, took the Dawgs' lead to 3-0 before the Kings put a puck past K. Hansen. Glasgow continued their scoring streak in the third, when Joshua Llewellyn and Barnett, assist B. Hansen, netted goals four and five for the Dawgs.
Copper City was called for five penalties while Glasgow incurred six infractions. Koski sat for tripping in the first. JP Cornwell served the team's too many men on the ice call and Charlie Cornwell sat for hooking in the second. Koski was called for roughing and interference and B. Hansen took a seat for interference in the third.
Game three for the Dawgs saw Glasgow go to a hard fought double-overtime loss against Flathead, who went on to win the state title. K. Hansen faced 54 shots in the crease, earning a 96.3 save percentage. Glasgow put 28 shots on Flathead's goalie. Both goalies racked up shut outs in the first two periods of play.
Price broke the scoring stalemate midway through the third period, converting on the man-advantage. Flathead scored with 13 seconds remaining on the clock. The first five-minute overtime ended without either team finding the back of the net. Flathead ended the nailbiter 1:55 into the second overtime, putting a puck past K. Hansen for the win.
While the scoring was low, the penalties were high in the game. Flathead was called for eight, while Glasgow racked up 42 minutes on 13 infractions. In the first period, Koski, tripping, and Price, roughing, were sent to the penalty box. Dillon Hughes took a 2-and-10 for checking from behind and Tristan Powell was called for tripping in the second period. Mason Hunter took an elbowing call, Boland was called for roughing twice and B. Hansen sat for roughing in the third period. In the first overtime, Barnett was called for a 2-and-10 for checking from behind, C. Cornwell was sent to the sin bin for hooking and Koski was called for interference.
Glasgow's entered the consolation game Sunday morning against Missoula intent on ending the season with a win and their perseverance paid off. K. Hansen turned away 25 of 26 shots, earning a 96.2 save percentage. Glasgow fired 27 pucks at the Bruins goalie, converting on four shots.
B. Hansen kicked off the Dawgs' scoring 3:20 into the game on an assist from Hunter. Six minutes later, he added the insurance goal. Missoula scored once in the second period, with Glasgow taking a 2-1 lead into intermission. Hunter scored on an assist from Barnett late in the third on a power play. Barnett netted the final goal of the game with 56 seconds remaining.
Missoula served time for five penalties, while Glasgow was sent to the box for 12 minutes on six infractions. B. Hansen was called for hooking and cross-checking in the second period. Koski served time for tripping, Deegan Ross for roughing, Price for hooking, and B. Hansen for roughing in the third period.
