The Scobey/Opheim Spartans claimed the number one spot in the boys basketball District 3C tournament in Malta this past weekend, while the North Country Mavericks walked away the girls champions.
The Spartans, North Country Mavericks and Dodson Coyotes will move on to the Divisional tournament in Sidney this weekend for the boys tournament. On the girls’ side, the Mavericks, Scobey/Opheim Spartans and Lustre Christian Lions will advance.
Action for the boys began last Wednesday. The Lustre Christian boys defeated Nashua by a score of 70-36 and North Country beat Frazer 76-30. On Thursday, Scobey/Opheim won over Lustre Christian by a score of 59-24 and North Country beat Dodson 50-41.
Friday’s loser-out games saw Frazer fall to Lustre Christian, 78-26, and Nashua lose to Dodson, 74-60, setting up a Dodson-Lustre Christian consolation game. Dodson won the game and the right to advance to the divisional tournament putting up 56 points to Lustre Christian’s 42. Scobey/Opheim defeated North Country 70-35 in the championship game.
Girls basketball action started on Tuesday of last week when Lustre Christian defeated Nashua 49-46 and Dodson beat Frazer 65-28. Thursday’s semifinals had North Country over Lustre Christian by a score of 62-26 and Scobey/Opheim over Dodson, 68-33.
Friday’s loser-out games saw Frazer fall to Lustre Christian, 60-21, and Nashua go down to Dodson, 54-45. Lustre Christian’s and Dodson’s wins set them up to face each other in Saturday’s consolation game, where the Lions earned a tight victory over the Coyotes, 51-49. In the championship game, North Country beat Scobey/Opheim in a decisive 67-31 win.
