Set New School Dual Record
The Glasgow Scotties' unusual wrestling season ended in a most usual way – strongly. "I feel like our guys are doing the right things right now," said coach Jory Casterline after his team finished the regular season this past weekend. "And that will carry over [into divisional and state tournaments]. We'll continue to get better every weekend."
Sidney and Poplar traveled to Glasgow on Feb. 19 for the Scotties' final regular season home match. Sidney, as was probably expected, came out on top in their dual against Glasgow, winning 47-12. The Scotties won two matches and dropped a few that Casterline described as close but which "didn't go our way." The coach welcomed the challenge presented by Sidney, saying the goal is to be as good as the Class A team.
The Scotties bounced back to blank the Indians, 69-0, including a big win for Dawson Boland against Jase Frederick. The senior secured his upset win in 1:52, pinning Frederick in the first period. "That was a big win for him," enthused Casterline.
Coach Casterline was also happy with his team's performance in Lewistown, against the hosts and Fairfield. In Fergus County, the Scotties avenged some earlier season losses, a significant measuring stick as the team goes into the post season. Glasgow beat Fairfield 57-16 and Lewistown 42-36. "I feel like our guys are doing the right things right now," he said.
This season has brought a number of adjustments and challenges amidst the coronavirus pandemic, but there have also been several silver linings. While their schedule reverted back to dual-centric line-up, grapplers dropped from up to five matches per tournament to two per day. The cutback in the number of matches presented challenges to conditioning, which the team made up for in their practice room. The flip side to the uptick in duals was the Scottie wrestling team setting a new school record for dual wins, breaking records set in 1975 and 1993. This season, the team racked up a 19-6 dual record, going 11-0 against Class B opponents. Casterline chuckled, "That might be a record that never gets broken."
One positive for the team was the increased number of home events. Those home events will play a factor going into the post season for Glasgow, who will enjoy home advantage after Colstrip withdrew from hosting this year.
Glasgow will host the first ever Eastern B/C Super Divisional tournament this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26 and 27. Nineteen schools will send wrestlers, hoping to punch their ticket to state. Casterline remains focused on his grapplers improving every day, qualifying for state and placing high. "It could be a close race between us and Huntley," he said, "but our main focus is getting guys to the state tournament."
With home mat advantage and challenges coming from several talented teams, Casterline remains confident in his team's abilities. "I think we've got the chance to qualify everybody," he said of his work horse team. "We've gotta come to wrestle."
Anticipation for the post season is running high as the Eastern B/C Super Divisional Tournament is sold out already. However, fans who were unable to procure a ticket can watch the action on the NFHS network and follow Glasgow Scottie Wrestling on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
