The Glasgow Scottie boys basketball team came off two big wins against conference rivals against Malta and Wolf Point to face two non-conference foes this past weekend. In games against Scobey/Opheim and North Country, the Class C teams bested the Scotties. Scobey/Opheim added another win to their undefeated record, taking Glasgow 70-24 at the Dawg Pound on Thursday night. Friday night the Scotties traveled to Saco where the North Country Mavericks took revenge for an earlier season loss against Glasgow. A strong second half gave the Mavericks the 58-37 victory.
Glasgow started off well against Scobey at home on Thursday, despite going down 12-6 in the first quarter. Keigan Skolrud put the Scotties on the board first and the home team held strong in the first eight minutes of play. However, the Spartans broke loose in the second quarter, powered by Aiden Fishell, who put in seven points. Scobey/Opheim took a 31-12 lead into half time.
The Spartans continued to run up the score in the third quarter with Jayce Tande starting the onslaught with two three-pointers. Glasgow put in only six points in the third, while Scobey/Opheim put up 23 points for a 54-18 lead going into the final quarter. The visitors kept up the full court press that had served them well throughout the game, forcing Glasgow turnovers in the fourth. The Spartans added 16 points while holding the Scotties to six, for the 70-24 win.
Skolrud led the Scotties with six points. Dalton Sand, Trevor Klind and Vinny Chappel added four each. Beau Malnaa, Keigan Ingram and Hunter Collinsworth had two points a piece. Sand, Klind, Chappell, and Skolrud had two fouls each while Riley Smith, Bergen Miller and Collinsworth had one in the game.
On Friday night, the Scotties faced the North Country Mavericks in Saco where they hoped to repeat an early season win. However, the Mavericks defended their home court and took a 21-point win, 58-37. Both teams put up eight points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Mavericks outscored the Scotties by one point to take a 14-13 lead into the break.
North Country came out strong after halftime, outscoring Glasgow 18-13 in the third quarter. Loden Idler led the Mavericks with seven points, while Klind put in two threes for the Scotties in the quarter. The Mavericks cemented their lead and the win in the final eight minutes of play, putting 26 points on their side of the scoreboard while holding the Scotties to 11 points.
Jon Rey Taylor put in 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including 4-of-4 at the free throw line, to lead the Mavericks. Idler added 14 points and Beau Simonson had 11 points for the home team. Trey Johnson and Jesse Lee had six each and Randy Gairett had five points. Taylor had four fouls, Simonson three, while Johnson and Lee had two each.
Skolrud led the Scotties with 14 points. Klind put up 10 and Miller added eight. Sand and Chappell had two a piece and Collinsworth added one from the free throw line. Sand and Chappell fouled out. Klind was called for four fouls, Skolrud and Collinsowrth had three each, Miller two and Smith one.
The Scotties host the Poplar Indians Thurs, Feb. 11. JV action will begin at 3:30 p.m. and the varsity will tip off at 6:30 p.m. Glasgow beat Poplar on 70-50 on Jan. 16, overcoming a first half deficit. All games will be broadcast on the NFHS network and KLTZ will broadcast the varsity game.
The team will travel to Harlem Friday, Feb. 12 in an attempt to avenge a Jan. 14 loss to the Wildcats. JV action starts at 3:30 p.m. with the varsity game starting at 6 p.m.
