Keigan Skolrud got the opening tip off for the Glasgow Scotties over the North Country Mavericks on Thursday, Jan. 7 in the Glasgow High School gymnasium. He would go on to lead all scorers with 23 points and help propel his Scotties to a crowd-pleasing come-from-behind victory. Loden Idler led the visiting team with 17 points in a game in which the Mavericks led up through the end of the third quarter.
North Country put the ball in the net first when Jon Rey Taylor fired off a three pointer. The Mavs came out out strong and took an early lead in the ball game, forcing the Scotties to play catch up. Taylor and Idler led the visitors in scoring in the first quarter, putting up seven and eight points, respectively, of their team's 20. Glasgow looked to their big man inside, feeding the ball to Skolrud who put up eight of Glasgow's 11 points.
The second quarter was more evenly matched, score-wise, with North Country putting up 15 points to Glasgow's 14. Idler started the scoring in the second quarter with a steal and a layup. Glasgow's more aggressive ball handling in the second led to a couple of charging fouls, adding to the six fouls they had incurred in the first and sending North Country into bonus freethrow territory. All of the Mavericks seven first half fouls came in the second quarter as both team played with more energy.
Hunter Collinsworth and Skolrud led the Scotties in points in the second quarter with four apiece including two free throws each. Bergen Miller added a three and Vinney Chappell a field goal, while Trevor Klind had a free throw to contribute to the Scotties' 14 points. Taylor and Jeremy Longtree each put in a field goal from beyond the perimeter, Beau Simonson had two field goals, Idler added one and Trey Johnson had a field goal and a free throw.
After halftime, the energy level shifted with Glasgow drawing fouls as Hinsdale incurred three early in the third quarter. North Country's only points in third came on an Idler lay up. Skolrud scored two field goals and sank two free throws to lead Glasgow with six points while Klind added a three pointer and Dalton Sand put in two buckets as the Scotties scored 13 points.
Going into the fourth quarter, Glasgow held a one-point lead at 38-37. The score would go back and forth in the final quarter as the two teams battled it out. Foul trouble for the Mavericks sent the Scotties to the line several times. Glasgow put in six of eight attempts at the charity line, half of their 16 points. With just under two minutes to play, Lee fouled Klind, sending him to the line for two free shots. Klind sank both to give the Scotties a 52-47 lead. He would add a lay up to the delight of the home crowd for a final score of 54-47.
Idler put in five points in the fourth for the Mavericks, while Simonson added a field goal and two free throws. Taylor added one point from the line. Klind had four points for the Scotties, Miller two, Skolrud seven and Collinsworth three, all from the line.
Taylor and Johnson had four fouls for the visitors followed by Lee and Idler with three each, and Simonson and Longtree one each. Sand fouled out for Glasgow while Collinsworth had four fouls, Miller and Klind two each, and Chappell, Beau Malnaa and Skolrud were each called for one.
Glasgow was 19 of 38 for field goals, including 3-for-10 from the perimeter. North Country sank 8-of-14 three pointers, going 17 for 43 overall. Glasgow was 13 of 22 from the line and North Country was 5 of 9.
The Scotties traveled to Scobey on Saturday for a match up against the Spartans. Glasgow may have used up their energy in their comeback win against North Country as they seemed to have little get-up-and-go against the Spartans, who defeated the Scotties 80-26.
Scobey took a 21-6 lead after the first eight minutes of the game. Bergen Miller put in a field goal for Glasgow and Skolrud put up four points. Collinsworth led the Scotties in teh second quarter, putting up six of Glasgow's 13 points, including two free throws. Skolrud added four points, Sand two, and Ashton Potter one.
