Scottie Speech and Drama Kick Off Virtual Season

The Glasgow Speech and Drama season is off to quite a different start this season, but by all accounts it is a successful one thus far. Due to coronavirus health and safety precautions, the entire season is being held virtually. The change has been a challenge for coaches and students, but one they have stepped up to meet.

The virtual season has come with its quirks as competitors adjust to the inevitable technology glitches, but coach Jodi Griffin tells the Courier, “We are working on getting better tech equipment with the hopes of improving video and audio quality for the remaining meets.” The new virtual format also means that competitors spend most of their Saturdays at the school, making for longer meets than they had become accustomed to.

Despite the quirks and adjustments, Glasgow students are moving forward with their season. Their inaugural 2020-21 meet was hosted by Belfry on Dec. 5. In that meet, Alesia Hopstad had a 12th place finish, Bailee Baxter a 13th place, Emma Whitmer a ninth place, Ian Wright a seventh place, Raelee Dowden a third place, Hailee Richardson a 17th, and Harley Edwards a second place.

“Everyone did great and this was all of the competing B/C schools in Montana so it was pretty much like state for these kids as far as competitor numbers,” Griffin said in a Facebook post. “They all did great for the first week out and their first virtual meet EVER!”

The team’s second meet was hosted by Red Lodge on Dec. 12, again in the virtual format. “All but one made the semi-finals last Saturday and two made finals,” Griffin said. “These kids are doing great considering the obstacles that a virtual season presents.”

Wright placed ninth, Baxter 14th, Dowden ninth, Hopstad 11th, Talon Laffin 14th, Richardson 21st, Chase Tarum 10th, Hunter Townes 16th, Madde Swindler eighth, Austin Lopez 16th and Edwards first.

The Glasgow Speech and Drama team will be competing again this Saturday, Dec. 19, taking part in the Choteau Virtual Invite. There is also a need for judges for upcoming meets. They are urgently seeking judges for the Dec. 19 meet, as well as for meets on Jan. 9 and 16, 2021 and the Divisional Tournament on Jan. 23, 2021.
