A Halloween Costume
Dear Editor,
As a lifelong resident of V.C. (with the exception of a couple of years spent in the State of Missouri) I was appalled by the communities’ reaction to a Halloween costume. A costume that must have been a good one to win first place in a judging. I do not personally know Mr. Morehouse, but I am giving him the benefit of assuming it was not done with malice. Was it poor taste on the part of Mr. Morehouse? I will have to admit that I would not have thought about it as anything other than a Halloween costume.
Now I will admit that as a Sr. Citizen I seldom visit the beverage places in town. Coffee shops included. However my husband and I have been in, and done business with, most of the businesses in town many times over the years. I have never witnessed anything that even suggested racism to me, let alone that our community was/is an unsafe place for people of color.
Mary Jo and Daruis, maybe some of you that feel so unsecure should organize a “Meet & Greet.” I assume that you live in Glasgow, possibly work in our community and have children in our schools. I have never had the occasion to meet you or to know if I have even see you on the streets of Glasgow, so my question, what are you basing your comments on?
I cannot put myself in your shoes as I am not black or brown, unless I have a good sun tan, but I am going to say that I do have friends of color that I enjoy, and I do resent the comments made in The Glasgow Courier.
Sincerely
Gwen Cornwell
