Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
With just over 100 total runners—after some COVID-related cancellations—the Scotties hosted a home cross country meet that left them happy and out of breath. The Scotties swept gold with both the Varsity boys’ and girls’ performances on Sept. 19. Led by Iris Mckean (first) and Emily See (third) the Scottie girls put up an impressive score of 36 (the scores are tallied by adding the first five Varsity places together making the smaller number the better number). The Scotties were followed by Class A teams Dawson County (40) and Sidney (79). Contributing to the girls’ success was the tight placement of their top five runners. The Scotties claimed four of the top eight spots at home giving them a sharp edge over the competition when scores were tallied.
Girls’ runner Haylly Turner told the Courier she thought the race was “pretty good.” Turner cited the pack of runners in the top eight—in which she claimed sixth overall—and the fast times to justify her perception of the race. “It felt good and I got a good time," she said. “The team did pretty well. I think everyone cut off their times.”
The Scottie boys put up a similar 37 points to beat out Richey-Lambert (50) by 13 points and Wolf Point (58) by 21 points. Carl Zabrocki led the boys with a third-place finish and a time of 17:25.51. Bergen Miller followed in fifth place. Similar to the girls’ performance the Scotties dominated the top 11 with all five of their top runners coming in at under 20 minutes and placing 11th or better.
Tenth place finisher for the boys, Reed Larsen, told the Courier it was a really good home meet. “It was really good,” he said, adding, “the course was nice and flat. There were some good teams there and great competition.”
Larsen added that the boys had definitely closed some gaps when it came to running as a team. As a result, the team had the high number of finishers in the top 11 spots to show for it.
The Scottie harriers head to Culbertson next after Frazer’s meet was cancelled due to COVID-19 infections. Culbertson’s race will be Sept. 26.
For his part, Larsen said he was “definitely looking forward to [Culbertson]” saying, “it’s a good course with some good competition.”
Turner echoed his excitement saying it was a flat course and that she expected the teams will do “very well.”
