"D" Line Continues to Dominate
Glasgow made their third road trip of the season and brought home another win this past Friday, Sept. 18. The Scotties defeated the Cut Bank Wolves 44-7, improving their record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Northern B conference. Glasgow's defensive line continued their shut-out streak and held Cut Bank's offense to under 100 yards.
The Scotties found the end zone first, on their opening drive. Quarterback Loden Idler got the ball to Jesse Lee for four carries to gain the running back 35 yards. Idler would score Glasgow's first touchdown on a 19-yard carry. Cut Bank's Matt Laron answered back, returning the kickoff for the Wolves' lone touchdown. Cut Bank would add the field goal to give the home team the 7-0 lead.
Head coach Patrick Barnett told the hosts of the Saturday Morning Sports Show on KLTZ that he felt his team may have looked a little sloppy starting the game, but that a bit of sloppiness is to be expected in most any game. He called the early mistakes "all fixable stuff" that the team would be working on this week.
In their second possession of the game, the Scotties would regain the lead, and build on it for the remainder of the game. A catch by Colten Fast and rushing by Tatum Hansen moved Glasgow up the field, setting up Lee to make a two-yard run into the end zone. Tel Aune, in his first game this season after sustaining an injury in the annual Red-White scrimmage, snatched the ball out of the air to add an extra two points to the Scotties score.
Just under halfway through the second quarter, Glasgow would add to their lead after pushing the ball up the field. The Scotties lead grew to 22-7 on a five-yard rush from Lee and a quarterback keeper with 7:39 remaining in the half.
Glasgow returned to the field after halftime by going strong with the ground game plan, relying heavily on Lee. Idler used his wheels to move the ball 23 yards for his second touchdown of the game. He would successfully toss the ball to Lee for the two point conversion. Glasgow held the 30-7 lead with 7:32 remaining in the third quarter.
A run by Cut Bank's Larson moved the Wolves 22 yards up the field, but Glasgow's defense held. A sack by Kyler Hallock was followed by a sack by Mayson Phipps with three minutes left in the third. Glasgow would regain control of play, and dominate the field for the remainder of the quarter, though the score held steady at 30-7.
The Scotties added to their score early in the fourth when an Idler run took Glasgow to a first and goal. Idler connected with Aune for a five-yard touchdown. Idler would keep the ball to add the extra two. With 11:20 remaining on the clock, the Scotties held the lead at 38-7.
Fast would make an easy interception catch for Glasgow with 10 minutes remaining in the game, setting the Scotties up for another run at the end zone. Fast told the Courier, "The season is going great and everyone on the team is performing at a substantially good rate and working hard."
A Dalton Sand one-yard carry would increase the Scotties' lead to 44-7 and start the running clock after the two-point attempt failed. The Scotties would hold on to their lead for the remainder of the game, running out the clock on their last possession.
Barnett noted in his radio interview the day after the game that Cut Bank was a physical group of kids. He felt his guys played well, highlighting the prowess of the defensive line in continuing their shut out streak and said the offensive line "played good."
Glasgow had 46 rushes for 334 yards, leading to five touchdowns in the game. They completed 11 of 17 passes for 128 yards and one touchdown. The Scotties held Cut Bank to less than a field's length, allowing only 76 total yards in the game. "I feel really good with the season so far," defenseman Mayson Phipps said, "The best part of it has been being able to get the win every game this year so far."
Idler told the Courier he put in a lot of work over the summer to improve his game, but points to his teammates for a significant portion of the team's success this year. "My teammates make it really easy," he said. "The front line works very hard getting their blocks and doing their assignments and I think that is the most dominant thing about us."
"I'm really proud of the kids," Barnett said, "and ready to keep rolling." Idler echoed his coach's sentiments, "We think the season is going very well but we aren't satisfied yet. We are hungry and ready for whatever the other team throws at us."
Glasgow football returns to Scottie Field this Friday, Sept. 25, hosting the Harlem Wildcats. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. and the game will be carried on KLTZ and NFHS Network.
