Reds Win On The Road

After an unexpected cancellation of their double header against the Wolf Point Yellowjackets in Wolf Point, which was supposed to be played on June 27, the Glasgow Reds traveled to Glendive on June 28 to play a doubleheader against the Glendive Blue Devils B. After battling it out in 12 innings over two games, the Glasgow Reds took home the wins, 10 to two in the first game and eight to two in the second game.

Game action started for the Reds in the first game when Walker Laumeyer grounded out, allowing Calvin Bengochea to go from second base to home, placing the Reds on the board. The next play in the inning saw Aiden Hoerster hit a ground ball, advancing Keigan Ingram to home, providing the lead for the Reds. The Blue Devils could not step up the hits against starting pitcher Chase Guttenberg, ending the inning with the Reds leading two nothing. The third inning saw the Reds continue the pressure, scoring four runs, with the first courtesy of Mason Donaldson stealing home base after Bengochea had a three ball, zero strike count. Due to the steal, Rance Rhoads was then able to steal third, placing him in scoring position, which he took advantage of a few plays later on due to a passed ball. Kristian Price then advanced to third base, while Bengochea advanced to second. A wild pitch by Blue Devils pitcher Axton Franks led Price to score and Bengochea to advance to third. Up to bat was Ingram, who singled a fly ball to left field, allowing Bengochea to score. The inning ended with no runs scored by the Blue Devils, and the Reds leading six to nothing.

The Blue Devils scored one run each in the fourth and fifth innings however could not close the gap created early on by the Reds. The Reds continued to extend the gap in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring two runs in each. The fifth inning saw Tel Aune double on a fly ball, allowing Tatum Hansen to score followed by Donaldson singling on a line drive, allowing Aune to score. The sixth inning saw Price single on a pop fly to center field, which allowed him to get on first base. Price advanced to second and third base on wild pitches, providing the opportunity to score when Bengochea singled on a line drive. The next batter, JT Sprague, tripled on a line drive to right field, allowing Bengochea to seal the score at 10 to two.

Guttenberg earned the win on the mound, lasting six innings, alllowing three hits, two runs and striking out 13. Donaldson threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Laumeyer, Aune, Bengochea, Sprague, Price, Ingram and Donaldson each collected one hit to lead the Reds, while Aune had the most chances on the field at 14.

The Reds kept the momentum going in their next game, starting off the scoring right away in the first inning courtesy of Aune scoring on an error by Blue Devils’ third baseman Franks. The second inning also saw a score from Bengochea due to Hoerster’s single on a fly ball to right field. The Reds continued their scoring in the third inning courtesy of Price and Hansen, ending the inning with the lead four to nothing.

The Reds notched another three runs in the fourth inning, as Aune singled on a hard ground ball to center field, allowing Hoerster to score. The next play saw Aune advancing to third due to Jake Kolstad hitting a ground ball and an error by Blue Devils Kobe Kutzler, setting Aune up to score in the next play when Price grounded out. Kolstad scored the final run of the fifth inning due to a passed ball from the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils scored late in the game with one run in the fifth and one run in the sixth, however could not keep up with the Reds offense, taking the loss two to eight.

Rance Rhoads took the win for the Reds, allowing nine hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out seven while walking one. In total, the Reds racked up 13 hits in the game, with Aune, Price and Bengochea managing multiple hits. Aune went four for five at the plate to lead in hits, while Price had five chances in the field, the most on the team. The Reds had a team total of 10 stolen bases of which Hansen led with three.

The Reds will travel to Wolf Point on July 4 to take on the Wolf Point Yellowjackets at 10 a.m. and the Homestead Bulls at noon.
