Dozens Compete at Home Run Pond Fishing Tourney

Dozens of kids and their support teams gathered at Home Run Pond at Sullivan Park on June 6 to cast their chances at taking home the biggest fish in the Walleyes Unlimited Kids' Fishing Tournament.
The wind was knocked down by the surrounding trees, the bugs were off on other business and the fish were biting. "I think everyone out here has caught at least one fish today," said Jill Thompson, whose sons participated in the tournament. Normally, a hopeful fisherman can hope for a bite or two, but this year the fish were cooperating.
Squeals of delight and disgust rang out across the pond as the kids reeled in trout, carp and catfish. Each fresh catch was raced in a bucket of water to the Walleyes Unlimited trailer for measuring before being released back into the "wild."
When the clock struck noon, Mason Landthorw, Pono McDonald and Brodie Bertsch claimed the top three places and prizes. Landthorw took the $100 first place slot with a 17 1/2-inch carp. McDonald's 17-inch carp earned him $50 and second place. A 16 1/4-inch trout earned Brodie Bertsch the $25 third place finish.
